Problems
[edit]I'm not going to correct the article because I don't know enough about the subject. However there are a couple of dodgy spots. In the first paragraph the rule of thumb stating melaena can only occur if the bleed is below a certain point seems to be contradicted by the earlier suggestion that melaena can be caused by a slow bleed from a lower source. I think at the least the contradiction needs to be acknowledged; at best, resolved.
I think the last bit of the second paragraph (about diagnostic tests) needs to be clarified too. To me it looks like a non sequitur with a sentence that doesn't make sense and a spelling mistake. I might be mising something though. Melaena (talk) 01:43, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
- I don't know much about the subject either. I only started watching this article because of vandalism. I've removed the last sentence of the diagnosis section. It was added in this edit in October 2007 by Nateydd, whose only other undeleted edits relate to the article he created, Stephen J. Prescott II. That article is about a barely notable person, and is not well-written either; therefore, I have proposed it for deletion. Graham87 04:39, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I agree with the above, the article is very confused in its thinking, and confuses may different types of blood in stool, bordering on dangerous if someone took medical advice from it. I'll try and fix some of it the best I can be bothered to. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.240.61.244 (talk) 20:48, 31 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your edit to the article. I'm sorry for initially undoing it. It's just that somebody had vandalized the article 23 minutes after your edit, which caused me to not notice your talk page message until now, and I was a bit suspicious about the timing. As I've said above, I don't know anything about this subject; the article is only on my watchlist to guard against vandalism. Melena → Melena(Medicine) — The article "Melena" may be a disambiguation page for the other articles with the same name, for example:
- Melena, Common name of plant Cymbalaria muralis.
- Melena. Municipality in the Havana Province in Cuba.
- Melena. In medicine, melena or melaena refers to the black, "tarry" feces that are associated with gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
Rogeliowar (talk) 04:17, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose No need to disambiguate. None of the other articles are titled Melena. If necessary, a disambiguation page could be set up at Melena (disambiguation), but the existing article is the clear primary topic for Melena. Incidentally, if this proposal does go through, it should be to Melena (medicine), not Melena(Medicine). Skinsmoke (talk) 05:56, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose - No clear reason has been given for disambiguation, and there is no need for it per Skinsmoke. Graham87 14:50, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose "Melena(Medicine)" is wrong by WP:TITLE ... Do you mean Melena (medicine) instead? 76.66.193.119 (talk) 04:41, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Comment what's wrong with melaena ? 76.66.193.119 (talk) 04:44, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose - the medical term is definitely the primary topic and we should not overburden article titles with unnecessary disambiguation. The spelling mistake is a minor issue. Green Giant (talk) 19:40, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Precaution banner
[edit]Why is the medical precaution banner not set? It seems to me there must be a good reason not to have set it, but otherwise, this is my vote to place the banner. 82.197.211.178 (talk) 09:18, 25 June 2015 (UTC)
- Which banner are you talking about? Graham87 13:51, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
Additional Source
[edit]I have an additional source for some of the statements. I'd add it, but I have limited time to kill while waiting for an experiment to finish up, so I don't really have the time to figure out citations on Wikipedia. If somebody would be kind enough to add it, I'd appreciate it.
Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 18th edition (edited by Longo, Fauci, Kasper, Hauser, Jameson and Loscalzo), has support for the following statements: -Under Causes, first paragraph, "Other medical causes... etc etc" is supported on pages 320 and 321 of Chapter 41 "Gastrointestinal Bleeding" by Loren Laine. -The statement on 14 hours for melena is supported on page 322, same chapter.
If anyone has a copy and is interested in improving the article, it's a decent resource. (If I find some time later, I'll probably try my hand at it, I just can't right now.)

- Thanks very much for this information; I've added the references. I've used {{rp}} to note the page numbers, as this makes the wiki-markup more tidy; I hope this is OK. Graham87 08:45, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
