Weight & size not accurate?

[edit]

This article suggests, that Megistotherium hardly weighed more than 1000 kg and definately not more than 1100 kg. I am no expert, but maybe someone could have a look at it?

  • 16-18 feet long? I think it would have weighed more than 1000 kg in that case. Also, there are contadictory statements about largest carnivore status in the first couple paragraphs.

  • The current most reliable size estimate appears to be 500 kg, and 150 cm tall at the shoulders, according to the sources. Since this creature is often mistaken to be the largest carnivorous mammal ever, especially on translated pages, I added a much-needed comparison of the size to other known carnivores. Hopefully this will reduce translation errors to the other Wikipedia languages.

Fact Checking

[edit]
  • I went through the refs given, and looked up several on my own in an attempt to rid the article of the 'Fact?' tags. While I found some support for the tagged statements, I could not find support for all of them. I deleted the sentences that I couldn't find support for. If someone does have a good reference for those statements (see older versions to find them), please include in-line citations when adding them back in. Hyainailurus

[edit]

So, how is the name supposed to be spelled? This article uses "Hyainailouros", the linked article uses "Hyainailurus" and I have seen other sources use "Hyaenailurus"? -user:1morey August 14, 2020 10:55 PM (EST)
