Original research
[edit]We aren't supposed to add "original research" into articles (see WP:Original Research). So for this article, we can't add etymologies like the Irish cuán, unless someone else has made that specific connection. Basically we are suppose to parrot what others have noted in reliable sources. We aren't supposed to put our own research into articles.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 08:05, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
The issue with the surname McCown is that there are no reliable sources. Based on my research, most of it is pure speculation. There are no DNA matches with the surnames Cowan, McEwen, McEoin, etc. In addition to that, DNA evidence also shows that many of McCown lineages have different origins as well. So anything that helps provide insight into the possibilities is equally as useful and informative as the "reliable" sources. (talk) 14:41, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
- Sure there are reliable sources, you've removed one of them Dictionary of American Family Names, published by Oxford University Press. Sorry but your own research just can't go into the article. It might be helpful to some people, but it still can't go in. What you could do is start your own website and post you research there. Wikipedia policy is that we only follow what our sources specifically state. We can't just 'connect the dots'. Like we can't just connect cuán and McCown on our own. See WP:SYNTHESIS which states: Do not combine material from multiple sources to reach or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any of the sources. If one reliable source says A, and another reliable source says B, do not join A and B together to imply a conclusion C that is not mentioned by either of the sources. This would be a synthesis of published material to advance a new position, which is original research. So, this article can't connect McCown with Clan Colquhoun, Clan Macewan, Mac Eoin or the Bissets unless a reliable source does. See what I mean?--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 06:31, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
