Requested move

[edit]

List of mayors of San DiegoMayor of San Diego – I am updating this page to be more of an actual article rather than just a list. The goal is for this page to emulate the example of the featured page Mayor of San Francisco. This would only end up replacing a redirect page, but for some reason it is coming up with the an error that states, "The page could not be moved: a page of that name already exists, or the name you have chosen is not valid." mcd51 (talk) 17:58, 22 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Acting or Interim

[edit]

The page now refers to Todd Gloria as the "interim mayor" of San Diego, but to others who've held exactly the same position, under the same circumstances, as "acting mayor." On one hand, Gloria refers to himself as "interim mayor" in a newspaper interview at http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/Aug/30/todd-gloria-interim-mayor. On the other hand, the city charter, without spelling out a title for a council president acting as mayor, refers to them as "acting" in Article XV, Chapter 265 (i), albeit in an indirect way and never refers to such a person as "interim." Given the charter's language, I think the best thing to do would be to refer to him as acting mayor, so we don't falsely distinguish between his position and that of prior acting mayors, and note in the associated footnote that he opted for the public style of "interim mayor," and perhaps even note that acting mayors are empowered by the charter to exercise some, but not all, of the powers granted to the mayor. Funny, I just tried to start the same discussion at Talk:Todd Gloria. I'll move those comments here: Apparently the role he is filling right now has no title in the city charter and does not include the full powers of an elected mayor. Most Reliable Sources are using the title "interim mayor" or "acting mayor". More confusing is the "City Council President" title. I read that he is keeping the title but transferring the duties to the council president pro tem Sherri Lightner. (I saw that in the paper edition of the U-T but can't find a link to it.) Oh, good, you have linked to it above! --MelanieN (talk) 19:12, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Responding to your points: He did refer to himself as interim mayor in the interview, but I don't think he has officially called himself anything yet. His page at the City of San Diego website [1] doesn't mention the mayor thing at all. Maybe we should wait for some kind of official word from him, and in the meantime leave the interim/acting title here as is. My offhand reaction is that there IS a distinction between him and his predecessors: they were "acting mayors" will full power to do anything a mayor can do, but he is "interim mayor" with limited powers. --MelanieN (talk) 19:16, 2 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

User:mcd51, you are nominating this for featured article? Would the normal procedure be to get it to Good article first? --MelanieN (talk) 03:04, 18 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't see that recommendation/procedure on Wikipedia:Featured list criteria or Wikipedia:Featured list candidates. There was a suggestion to do a Peer review, which I did to little response. I'm inclined to let it ride now that the nomination is up, but I'll defer to your understanding of procedure if you think it's a major issue. mcd51 (talk) 14:33, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'd say let it ride. I think the procedure may be different for lists than for regular articles. --MelanieN (talk) 14:51, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification needed?

[edit]

It strikes me in looking at this otherwise excellent article that there is no explanation for the numbering in the list - for the fact that "interim" or "acting" mayors are not tallied. Shouldn't that be explained somewhere? Or is it there and I missed it? Pinging @Mcd51: for discussion. --MelanieN (talk) 21:31, 12 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I can't find a citation to confirm, but it seems like the City Clerk only tallies mayoralties where the Mayor is either elected or officially appointed by the City Council. The City Clerk's site includes a document [2] listing historical mayoral election results and appointments but not interims or acting. Leaders of the City Council who temporarily fill some of the roles of mayor while waiting for an election/appointment don't seem to count. Not sure what the best way to clarify this would be, but I'm open to suggestions. mcd51 (talk) 01:05, 16 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not objecting to doing it that way, in fact I think it's fine. I'm just looking for a *footnote or something to explain why some are not tallied in the count. Maybe something like This list includes Interim and Acting mayors for completeness, even though they are not added to the numerical tally of mayors. I'm sure that could be worded better. --MelanieN (talk) 22:26, 16 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense; were you thinking of something like how it is on the page for Mayor of Los Angeles#List? mcd51 (talk) 16:14, 17 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Something like that, but without specifying "council presidents" - since our acting and interim mayors have come from a variety of positions. Maybe something like this: "This list includes people who served as acting mayor or interim mayor due to a vacancy in the office of the mayor, but who were not officially elected or appointed as mayor. The acting and interim mayors are not included in the count of mayors." I like the way they put it just above the table; I don't think it needs to be in a footnote too. --MelanieN (talk) 20:24, 17 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have added this suggestion; feel free to alter it. --MelanieN (talk) 17:29, 22 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good, but I just noticed there was a similar but less comprehensive note right above. I've deleted the duplicate note. mcd51 (talk) 00:59, 23 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Whoa, I totally missed that! But it is probably better right above the list, as they did with the LA mayors. MelanieN alt (talk) 16:59, 23 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
