Who was killed? Who were the rioters?
[edit]I am guessing - because the article only alludes at that - that the rioters were mainly immigrants, and thus the short old men was also an immigrant. If this is the case, this needs to be clearly stressed. Otherwise, the article does a terribly poor job explaining the question "why would Swedes riot". --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 10:09, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- Many "short old men"? :) Guess you mean "shot old man"...
- You are looking for a simple explanation. You may not find one. Mange01 (talk) 19:33, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- The question is already addressed in the backgrounds section, by Mats Berglund (a historian who's done research on riots). His view is then shared in the second paragraph of the analysis section, by Sarnecki. Narayanese (talk) 20:13, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
- Sarnecki (as quoted in this article) merely points out that the rioters are unhappy with their situation, which is hardly surprising, but doesn't really explain why they express their discontent by rioting. Looking at the referenced article in Aftonbladet, his argument can pretty much be summed up as "violent people were responsible for the violence", again not much of an explanation. You can find violent people and discontents pretty much everywhere. What most people really want to know is why these particular criminals and discontents chose to riot at this particular time, which he doesn't even try to explain. Oh, and to answer Piotrus's question: yes, the old man who was shot was an immigrant. Portuguese, IIRC. Don't know why it's suddenly become taboo to even mention him... Maitreya (talk) 11:38, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
- For starters why is the nationality of this man of any importance? What's important is that he's dead and that the swedish police are looking into what happened (which AFAIK is a standard procedure everytime anyone is shot by a policeman). We don't know that his death had anything to do with the riots. We have one opinion (a pressrelease from Megafonen) that claims it to be so and we have several other sources, including inhabitants in Husby and one of Swedens most famous criminologists that say it has nothing to do with the riots and has only been used as an excuse. We can't include everyones view and theory including all the details, how would the article on the assassination of John F. Kennedy or for that matter the even larger investigation on the murder of Swedish primeminister Olof Palme look if we did so? GameOn (talk) 06:27, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
- Important or not, a lot of people want to know. I don't see any point in withholding that information. Once there's been more time for proper documentation and analysis of what actually happened it may be possible to make strong assertions about which explanations are credible and which aren't, assuming the whole thing isn't just quietly swept under the rug. At this early stage, however, I think it's premature to dismiss Megafonen's theory out of hand. There are always deeper underlying causes behind riots, which is why I think Sarnecki is really just pointing out the obvious without adding much of interest to the discussion, but that doesn't preclude the possibility that the shooting may have been the trigger.
