Common Tangent Line

[edit]

It would be great if the article could make a connection to the common tangent line construction (in the free energy of the system) for finding phase equilibrium. This is done frequently, for example here: https://books.google.de/books?id=1gYPBAAAQBAJ&lpg=PA499&dq=common%20tangent%20line%20equilibrium&hl=de&pg=PA499#v=onepage&q=common%20tangent%20line%20equilibrium&f=false Biggerj1 (talk) 12:39, 28 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have done this, and also added a Common Tangent Line section to the vdW equation page. A good suggestion.Airman72 (talk) 21:32, 16 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An alternative approach without obtaining roots

[edit]

The first pair of equations for the gas and liquid volumes are unnecessary; I believe they should be removed. It should be clarified that the solution in this section is parametric; the "d" variable is auxiliary and parametrizes the solutions to the Maxwell construction. It ranges from 0 (critical temperature) to infinity (zero temperature). The temperature (or pressure) that a given value of "d" corresponds to can only be determined numerically.

There is also some inconsistency in the conventions for the reduced variables in this section and the previous section. Jdmiller97 (talk) 00:16, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I agree and will remove this material if no one responds to argue against it. In addition I think that the section on the solution of the cubic is also unnecessary. There is already a page in Wikipedia on Cubic Equations that contains all these equations. Airman72 (talk) 10:38, 3 October 2023 (EDT)

If the page is still as clear as it is now after removal, or even becomes clearer, that's a good reason to remove something. But if its presence on the page helps the reader understand the material more clearly, it should not be removed. Qflib, aka KeeYou Flib (talk) 15:39, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've just re-read the page completely, and it's gotten into rather a mess. Edit away if you think you can make it better! Qflib, aka KeeYou Flib (talk) 15:43, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
