Rubel was aware as a major scholar of Marx that Marx was part of the libertarian tradition, given his critique of money and state, thus distancing Marx from the many statist and reformist thinkers and movements that followed Marx's death and thereby distorted his work while adopting his name. Rubel's article entitled Marx, Theoretician of Anarchism was of course a humorous and purposefully provocative title, but one making an important point, since Marx's work could be contrasted with not just that of the pseudo-Marxists, but even that of key anarchists such as Proudhon, Marx's friend, and Bakunin, his occasional drinking partner in Paris, who advocated small-scale capitalism which Marx was aware would require a state, since that repressive organ evolved to protect the interests of each epoch's ruling class.
