Birthplace
[edit]Where is his birthplace? --Sheynhertzגעשׁ״ך 03:19, 25 November 2005 (UTC)
- Khimki (Russian: Химки) near Moscow - the name relates to Chemistry, because Khimki is a one of the centers of chemical production in Russia. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sheynhertz-Unbayg (talk • contribs) 03:19, 25 November 2005.
Relatives
[edit]Kontsevich is an uncommon name --- I'm guessing he has some relation to Lev Kontsevich, the scholar of Korean studies? (The guy who created the Kontsevich system for transcribing Korean words into Russian). Anyone got a source? cab 09:26, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
- Evidence for it: his patronymic starts with an "L" [1], and [2] describes his father as "an expert on Korean language and history". But nothing concrete yet. cab 01:29, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
- Well, an anon added it in that he's Lev's son [3], though I don't see any reliable source for it. I guess the fact that his patronymic is Львович can be sourced [4], so it doesn't seem like much of a leap. cab 18:08, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

1980 - olympiad results, university admission and Jewish quota
[edit]According to this page Kontsevich qualified for the 1980 USSR team to the international mathematical olympiad on the basis of "his annual victories" in the All-Union Olympiads, but the IMO was cancelled that year.
https://urfodu.org/tr/en/experts/kontsevich_maxim_lvovich/,
This is of interest not only because it clarifies Kontsevich's level of precocity but also because the Jewish quota at Moscow State was in place at the time and qualification for the IMO was the way around the quota. Grisha Perelman used the same route to university two years later.
Is there a source, perhaps in Russian, for the details of Kontsevich's olympiad results? 73.149.246.232 (talk) 04:11, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
