[edit]I think that it should be merged. Turtle926 (talk) 23:41, 15 October 2011 (UTC) The article says that, "Because of Mavis Beacon's race, some computer software distributors, mostly but not exclusively in the southern United States, were initially reluctant to display the computer software." In the article cited, however, it says: "some stores in the South and Southwest had been reluctant to display the product at first because there was a black woman on the package. But reluctance to carry the product was not confined to those regions of the country. Mr. Abrams said he had also been turned down by 47th Street Photo in Manhattan..."
So, first of all, it's about stores, not distributors. Second, the cited article says South and Southwest. Nothing in the cited article supports the "mostly...in the southern United States" The only store mentioned by name is in Manhattan. Unfortunately, it appears the statement from the cited article has been rewritten to fit a narrative of continuing Southern racism. I've edited. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.82.27.143 (talk) 22:24, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi! Mavis Beacon teaches typing is good and fun, and it has games, too.
"Mavis Beacon is a fictional female African-American character..."
[edit]Why do we need to say "female African-American" in the lede? The lede for Mr. Six doesn't say "a male white advertising character...". The lede for Flo (Progressive Insurance) doesn't say "a fictional white female character...". The lede for Hatsune Miku doesn't say "a Japanese/Asian female". Let the character's gender be expressed by the pronouns the article uses. As for race, I see no official source from Broderbund specifying that she is African-American: she is only identified as such by news articles. If there was some sort of official profile that specified the character's country of origin, we could mention that. The model she is based on is Haitian, so no "African" there. I guess people are profiling the character: "She has dark skin so she must be African-American". It is discriminatory to only "mark" descriptions of certain genders or ethnicities. I'm being bold and removing it. --75.92.61.32 (talk) 22:42, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
