Historical significance

[edit]

A couple of comments. I realize that this article is somewhat of a stub but really does not address the historical significance of the treatise (in fact it spends more time discussing the history of its Western discovery than it does discussing its significance as a mathematical work). Also, there is ongoing debate regarding the extent to which Chinese mathematics was influenced by discoveries in the Mediterranean and India (apart from any direct evidence some scholars argue that since much of what this and other Chinese texts contain was known in the Med more than a millennium earlier there had to be some transfer of knowledge which influenced the text). These things should be discussed in the article to be more complete. --Mcorazao (talk) 18:49, 26 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Historical significance Much of the work in this book by Qin Jiushao was based on the work presented in The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art, which clearly predates the debated time period.

The article mentions the "Lin Long method", which should be corrected to read "ling long kai fang". I don't believe it was intended as an actual title for the method, merely a name meaning something like "polynomial ladder solution" or "simple polynomial ladder solution". It is very difficult to translate precisely from such an old text. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DednDave (talkcontribs) 02:04, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
