Weather gage

[edit]

In Weather gage, there is a statement that the pre-start circling in match races is to gain the weather gage. I'm not sure this is correct (see Talk:Weather gage). Could somebody who really understands match racing please check it out and correct if need be? RoySmith 8 July 2005 11:37 (UTC)

Match Races for horses, people too

[edit]

There is a tradition in horse racing whereby the term match race applies when two horses compete in a race not open to any other horses. Maybe disambiguation is needed between the sailing term of art, and the use of the same expression in other sports? Match races for human runners are also not unheard of. Unfortunately from this reader's perspective, in at least one Wikipedia article, a footrace involving multiple competitors is called a "match race" between the two leading competitors: see the article on Jim Ryun, and the race in which he and Marty Liquori were the standouts. Impact of recent student edits

[edit]

This article has recently been edited by students as part of their course work for a university course. As part of the quality metrics for the education program, we would like to determine what level of burden is placed on Wikipedia's editors by student coursework.

If you are an editor of this article who spent time correcting edits to it made by the students, please tell us how much time you spent on cleaning up the article. Please note that we are asking you to estimate only the negative effects of the students' work. If the students added good material but you spent time formatting it or making it conform to the manual of style, or copyediting it, then the material added was still a net benefit, and the work you did improved it further. If on the other hand the students added material that had to be removed, or removed good material which you had to replace, please let us know how much time you had to spend making those corrections. This includes time you may have spent posting to the students' talk pages, or to Wikipedia noticeboards, or working with them on IRC, or any other time you spent which was required to fix problems created by the students' edits. Any work you did as a Wikipedia Ambassador for that student's class should not be counted.

Please rate the amount of time spent as follows:

  • 0 -No unproductive work to clean up
  • 1 - A few minutes of work needed
  • 2 - Between a few minutes and half an hour of work needed
  • 3 - Half an hour to an hour of work needed
  • 4 - More than an hour of work needed

Please also add any comments you feel may be helpful. We welcome ratings from multiple editors on the same article. Add your input here. Thanks! -- LiAnna Davis (WMF) (talk) 19:44, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

is this being judged by the Borelli or the Crowe quality metrics? If we don't know the answer to this question there isn't much point commenting. Sorry to point out the obvious.  Tigerboy1966  21:33, 27 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Horses

[edit]

This is really a sailing article with a bit of horse racing tacked on. I would suggest renaming the article Match racing (sailing) and starting a new one called Match (horse race). Tigerboy1966  09:02, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to 2 external links on Match racing. Please take a moment to review my edit. You may add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it, if I keep adding bad data, but formatting bugs should be reported instead. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether, but should be used as a last resort. I made the following changes:

Events

[edit]

In the early 1990is there was Omega Grand Prix of Match Race Sailing. There was Match racing world championship (open) until it was replaced by the World Match Racing Tour (winner of the WMRT was given the title of the world champion). After WMRT transitioned to (too expensive) catamarans, European Match Race Tour (on monohulls) was started in 2017. Today still exists women's match racing world championship. Women's match racing was part of the ISAF world cup in its initial seasons. Setenzatsu (talk) 18:15, 24 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
