I was trying to add a external link to a fansite about Massive Attack (http://massiveattack.ie) which I've created but it is kept being undone. Apologies for this if it angered anyone, as I'm rather new to editing Wikipedia. Anyway, I was looking at the guidelines for adding external links and under the "Links to be considered" section it says "Sites which fail to meet criteria for reliable sources yet still contain information about the subject of the article from knowledgeable sources." I would consider myself very knowledgeable about this band. Please take a few minutes to look around my site, as I think it is contributing alot of information about Massive Attack. Information that Wikipedia lacks currently. So under that criteria I would to add my fansite without it being removed. Cheers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nametaken12 (talkcontribs) 13:46, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

  • From WP:ELNO: "Any site that does not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a Featured article." What 'unique resources' does your site provide that are not already provided by other sources? Also, please review section 1 of this policy. Dp76764 (talk) 14:47, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Unique Resources:- I'll make a list of a few things which make my site stand out as a large source of information and media to do with Massive Attack which are not offered anywhere else on the internet. I'll provide links to the pages on my site to back up these claims.

70GB of live recordings (either lossless or DVD quality) of Massive Attack to download either as Megaupload or bittorent. I have been given the OK from the band's management to do this as well: http://www.massiveattack.ie/bootography/losslessaudiobootlegs/home.php

Detailed recording info on over 70 Massive Attack songs. Here are examples of such info for 2 of their most popular songs - http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/songs/teardrop.php http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/songs/unfinishedsympathy.php

Detailed discography info on all of Massive Attack's physical releases such as CD's and vinyl's for all their albums, singles and promos. Here again are two examples of such discographies for Teardrop and 100th Window: http://www.massiveattack.ie/collector/discography&memorabilia/teardrop.php http://www.massiveattack.ie/collector/discography&memorabilia/100thwindow.php

A current and archived news section going back to 1998 with just about every memorable moment in the band's history in that time covered. I also keep the news updated very regularly. Today in fact. Current News: http://www.massiveattack.ie/news/current/0708.php Archived News: http://www.massiveattack.ie/news/archive/home.php

A videography section with detailed info on the making of all of Massive Attack's promo videos. Not only this but one can also watch/download live clips of their songs in question as well as videos of Massive Attack's songs being used in other media such as movies and TV shows. Here's an example of my videography page for Angel: http://www.massiveattack.ie/videography/angel.php

A Gigography section for all of Massive Attack's shows from 2003 right up until yesterday when I updated with their show last night. The majority of these pages contain pictures and reviews of each show in question (over 200 now). Here's an example of one such Gigography page: http://www.massiveattack.ie/gigography/010708.php

Community features such as an active forum, a chatroom and my own wiki dedicated to Massive Attack The wiki is undeveloped at the moment but I have plans in the future to fill it full of further info about the band.

I also have a jukebox on every page at the moment which is streaming a live recording of the new songs played this year which will be on next year's album which I think are of interest to many people.

Well there's my case. While I'm on this topic other Massive Attack fansites should be added like Red Lines and MassiveAttackArea. If Rhapsody's page about Massive Attack can be included then these fansites who have contributed alot of their time (and are non-commercial in nature) covering this band should also be. Thanks for listening.Nametaken12 (talk) 12:08, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Can I please get a decision on this from one of the editors? Thank you. Nametaken12 (talk) 10:57, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi I would like a response on this please. Yes, No? I looked at the link provided by Dp76764 and it says "On articles about topics with many fansites, for example, including a link to one major fansite may be appropriate." So with that in mind, I would like to be able to add a link to my fansite. I understand the linkfarm and conflict of interest arguments and I will not argue about that. So , just a Yes or No. Also while on this topic, I don't think the Rhapsody link is of much value to the encyclopedic content of the article. It seems to be just a page to download/buy the songs. Thanks! Nametaken12 (talk) 14:05, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Nametaken12, I have been one of the editors warning you here and there regarding this link, and we have added it to XLinkBot for autoreverting. You say "my fansite", WP:COI says "... but if you have a conflict of interest avoid, or exercise great caution when ..... 3 Linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam)...". I would therefore suggest that you stay with suggesting your site only on talkpages for now, letting other editors decide if they want to include the site, and then include it for you. I hope this explains. --Dirk Beetstra T C 15:18, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

No problem Dirk. Won't do that again. Would it be acceptable to add information from my site to the Wiki page and then put a link in the Resources section. Should I open another Talk article for that before I do it? Nametaken12 (talk) 15:35, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

If the site is a good source for something, have a look at the citation and the footnotes guidelines. If you add suitable content with your site as a ref like that then that would be fine (and I guess you are a specialist, there may be other sources out there which you can also be used). When in doubt, first consult the talkpage. By the way, is there a WikiProject for Massive Attack (or similar), my guess would be Wikipedia:WikiProject Massive Attack (but it may have a different name). People there may be very suitable to help you! --Dirk Beetstra T C 15:52, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Vocal duties?

Is "duties" really the most appropriate word? Just sounds a bit, I dunno, colloquial to me. I've changed it to "contributions", but if anyone else feels strongly, please feel free to revert it or change it to something else Dom Kaos (talk) 02:06, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Tense

is there a reason the whole timeline section is written largely in present tense rather than past tense? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.14.104.121 (talk) 16:10, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

LP5 especulation

I think that "especulating" is not suitable for the Wikipedia. I'd remove this part —Preceding unsigned comment added by Federoy (talkcontribs) 17:10, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Cleanup, copyedit, etc

I have started cleaning up this article, copy-editing, removing sources which are NOT WP:RS, removing duplicate wikilinks, aiming for consistency in tense and other fixes in accordance with WP:MOS and referencing properly. Will return to this tomorrow. Hope to have finished by the weekend. Jezhotwells (talk) 21:48, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Photo

That's what I mean... because of the rules it has to be a live shot, even though no-ones gonna have a problem with a promo picture. And also it would far better to have a pic of the both of them. EXCLEY (talk) 22:13, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

I was thinking of combining two or three photos and using others in the article. I agree Daddy G should be there as well. Can you identify the female singer in the shots at {http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Massive_Attack}? Jezhotwells (talk) 22:16, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
With regards to promo shots they have to be properly licensed, which may be hard to achieve. I wil email them tomorrow to ask for the correct permissions. Jezhotwells (talk) 22:17, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
That's Yolanda Quarty from Phantom Limb...

Not appropriate to put her with the main pic[s] as she's a guest vocalist and may not even feature on "LP5"... We also thought one could use the painting of D and G under fair use rationale, but then it got deleted... EXCLEY (talk) 22:21, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Yup, fair use of obviously UK sourced images is often problematic due to UK copyright law. What is needed is incontovertible proof that the image originastor has released using a license such as {http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/} Jezhotwells (talk) 22:53, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Okay. Some good work done. EXCLEY (talk) 18:55, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Peer review

The automated peer review has generated some useful suggestions, which I will attempt to implement during the next week. Jezhotwells (talk) 01:19, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

How do [citation needed] things work?

Why is it okay to put one next to 'Grant Marshall resents the term trip-hop' but not next to Massive Attack signing a deal for 6 albums and a Best Of, which I have been told by their representation to be true but have no internet reference for. Thanks EXCLEY (talk) 20:31, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

I made the 6 albums clause invisible as it cannot be sourced. It can be put back when a source is found. Thanks for the heads up on the signing, I misread the reference, 1988 is when the label was created. I referenced the resented the term trip hop, had to change the tense as that was what the reference implied, and thus removed the citation tag.Jezhotwells (talk) 20:42, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Actually, I just fixed that, my previous was lost in an edit conflict. Jezhotwells (talk) 20:50, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Peer review

A peer review has been conducted at Wikipedia:Peer_review#Massive_Attack. On first reading I find many useful points here and propose to address them. Other comments welcome. Jezhotwells (talk) 19:03, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Alternative Music?

I see the Alternative music project tag has been the subject of controversy. Massive Attack have substantial entries in both Dave Thompson's Alternative Rock and Steve Taylor's The A to X of Alternative Music. If being considered "alternative music/alternative rock" by two of the better books dedicated to alternative music/rock is not good enough to be included in the Alternative music project then maybe that project should be renamed Alternative Rock to reflect its narrower focus? --Michig (talk) 19:04, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

frustration?

In the LP5 Speculation section, I'd like to remove "to the frustration of some fans." It doesn't seem appropriate for an encyclopedic article and it sources someone's opinion on a message board. Air.light (talk) 05:58, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Peer Review

I recommend a peer review for this article, with an eye to nominating for GA status. –– Jezhotwells (talk) 00:19, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
