Unlawful signs?
[edit]Route 88 is peculiar in that long stretches of it do not meet the criteria under Massachusetts statutes for a limited-access or express state highway -- these must be divided highways -- yet signs have been posted unlawfully prohibiting bicycling, which would be convenient and safe with its wide shoulders.
There are other arterial highways in Massachusetts that have the same "illegal" signs: U.S. Route 44 between Route 18/28 (the Middleborough Circle) and Route 105 in Middleborough immediately comes to mind. Which statute is it that is being cited?
It's interesting to note that the Plimoth Plantation Highway, a two-lane freeway in Plymouth, from the eastern terminus at Route 3A to where the highway divides prior to merging with Route 3 west of Sandwich Road, does not prohibit bicycles from that portion. With that said, it's a very bad idea to bike along any stretch of that highway. Ed (talk) 05:01, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Southern terminus
[edit]I am changing the length of the highway and the southern terminus to reflect what the signage actually says. As of 2009, the "State Highway Begins/Ends" signs, as well as the "Mile 0" markers, are all at the northern end of the Horseneck Beach State Reservation lands. While most official sources put it south of this point, by all mile markers this is the actual end of 88. ToddC4176 (talk) 14:33, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
