Different Roman alphabet spellings for films

[edit]

I think we need a universal consensus again. We need a permanent one time practice solution.
Producers, distributors, Music right holders, articles may use their own "interpretations". What's the final verdict for wikipedia?-- Dravidian  Hero  13:20, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

See I'm very particular and too much involved with this article since months. Until the film was in discussions in media and all, when posters weren't out, the most used was Mariyaan. Since the English official poster release on Sony Music South's page claimed Maryan. Even audio CD's have claimed it Maryan. The trailer however claims Mariyan but the use of Mariyaan is nearly no where. recent rev

[edit]

Johannes, please explain your edit in detail here. I can't see what you call "trivia." Thanks.-- Dravidian  Hero  09:37, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I will explain all my edits here. Look and learn folks:
  • "As per reports of 18 August 2012, the song "Nenjae Ezhu" crooned by the music composer himself, was finalized after being shot in one of the oldest off coastal deserts of the world featuring the leading duo"
this sentence has nothing to do with the music, it belongs into filming section. Done.
  • "The lyricist Kutti Revathi was brought on board two and a half years ago for the song by the film director. On penning the lyrics for "Nenjae Ezhu" she quoted, "Both of them (Bharat Bala & A.R. Rahman) were very clear that it should be a meaningful song. If the song needed two verses, I wrote eight, and Rahman was able to pick the lines that would work. Neither of them wanted words that we have all already heard"
1) she was a poet before she was brought on board (not the same as lyricist!) 2) two and years ago is WP:REALTIME, avoid! 3) Instead of copy-pasting the whole paragraph, reword it and make it short and crisp. I changed it to: "she intended to convey a positive message to young people. She added that Rahman picked the lines, who wanted to avoid words "that we all have already heard"" - the content is the same but text is shorter (I'd have changed the last part too, but I couldn't think of a good paraphrase at that moment). That's called copyediting!
  • Additionally, the words also appeared in the promos of song "Nenjae Ezhu""
WP:OR.
  • "In the end of January 2013, singer Velmurugan had recorded a song for the background score of the film"
same as above: I shortened this sentence by removing redundant words. He has sung a song, so we know he's obviously a singer, no need to emphasize again!
  • "The first teaser of the film made it evident that the audio rights were bagged by Sony Music.[1]"
1) This is an example for unneeded trivia. Absolutely unneeded. It does not give any important information that hasn't already been covered in the infobox and 2) "made it evident" is MOS:OPED, also WP:OR
  • "In an interview with Times of India, the film director claimed that the track "Kadal Raasa Naan" was already recorded but Rahman insisted on re-recording it with a singer who could impart more emotions with an earthy voice to the song and hence, opted for Yuvan Shankar Raja. The song was attributed as a rustic yet character driven number.[2]"
just some little rewording, changed the past tense and the last line, nothing else.
  • "The song was re-recorded on 25 April 2013 in Chennai during wee hours"
during wee hours. Trivia. Uninteresting. Unneeded.
  • "The online pre-booking of the soundtrack album opened up on Flipkart on 2 May 2013 and it revealed only names of all the seven tracks.[3]"
The source just leads to Maryan's flipkart site, so why this particular line? Redundant. Also "it revealed" is editor's opinion. Avoid!
So it was aired on all Radio Mirchi stations. Dot. What's with the addition of the time, height of trivia nonsense!
  • Then I removed all whitespace and put a space where needed (A.R. Rahman - here is a space needed between "A." and "R."!), removed the wikilink to the same page (| Longtype = to Maryan), removed an unnotable source (fulloncinema.com), removed the zeroes from the lenghts because zeroes at the beginning are worthless and hence redundant. So is there still some doubt? You people should actually thank me for improving this article's quality. This is really not fair! Johannes003 (talk) 11:18, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Seems like reasonable changes. But why did you remove the music reception header?-- Dravidian  Hero  12:47, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thought it can be left out since there were just two paragraphs. That's not a big deal for me, though. Johannes003 (talk) 22:42, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You better have a look at Wikipedia's featured articles, Johannes. See the how well referenced they are written. Look at its way. First of all its very difficult to acquire much of information about music of Tamil film soundtracks. I agree with some terms mentioned above. However you are just trying to summarize and summarize the matter which is well written. I don't know. Moreover it seems you are trying to prove what you summarize is only correct and what others do that's wrong? You are claiming everything as trivia, you decide what is interesting and not interesting, redundant words and God knows, buh!. Then why don't you say the entire page is trivia? High time. Its better to work where you don't poke in with your ideas and stating "trivia", "trivia" all the time. Enough of it. You are really sick. I'm not going to work on this article anymore.

Dravidianhero, I hope you manage well. All the best to you...
Arjann (talk) 17:16, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to see Johannes making some persuasive and respectful statements regarding Arjann's work to encourage him to continue his work here. Otherwise I'll be out of here as well as it would be seriously disheartening not to see him here anymore. Please make some concessions to Arjann, Johannes.-- Dravidian  Hero  17:26, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Arjann, dear Dravidian, look, everyone is allowed to contribute here, that's the best thing about Wikipedia, that's the basic idea of Wikipedia. But that does not mean you can write whatever you want (you can try though) and you cannot expect that it will not be challenged. People collaboratively work here. I also started in a small way here and believe me, many of my earliest edits were also undone, long texts I wrote were drastically shortened, and I was as furious as you are now, so I can very well understand your feelings. But I took other editors' advice and learned from my mistakes, I learned that some edits are useful and some aren't and now I have elevated pages to "Good article"-level (with the help of other experienced editors). And I have read many good and featured articles, that's where I actually learnt from! Not every minuscule information is useful, people. Arjann, it's not me who decides things, there are guidelines, brother. If not me, some other experienced editor would make these changes. I do not think that I'm perfect and that everything I do is right and that everything else is wrong. I never undervalue or disregard the contributions of other users. The core of this article is still the same and basically I have retained all information you added so far (provided that they are really important), which actually means that you have done a good job. I agree there is very little information about Tamil music albums, so what? Why is that a problem? Worse things happen at the sea, it's no problem if the music section is not overly long. Long is not always better.
I would never want to discourage or shoo away editors from here, that was surely not my intention. I'm on the verge of quitting Wikipedia, because it's too time consuming and I want new editors like you to continue work here and improve many many more Tamil/Indian film-related articles. So please do not give up too fast, try to learn how to do it the right way. Articles like WP:BETTER and WP:COPYEDIT can help you in writing better articles. Didn't Dravidian agree that the changes were reasonable? We learn from mistakes. As told here, don't get upset! Cheer up guys and please continue editing. Casting

I would prefer that this article have a section named "casting", which can include the actor's interviews with newspapers about their characters, to make this article look like Hollywood standards. The sources that can be used are:
