obvious contradiction

[edit]

"her close friend Gracie Allen" versus "Gracie Allen loved Jack Benny, but merely tolerated Mary" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.127.236.76 (talk) 00:33, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why hasn't this been corrected or commented on in the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Robfwoods (talkcontribs) 22:02, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It does seem that there is a lot of unsubstaniated gossip on this profile. I am quite suprised that the editors have not clamped down on this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.113.157.73 (talk) 00:54, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

/* obvious contradiction */  Sadye Marks (a.k.a. Mary Livingstone) was NOT related to the Marx Brothers in anyway, nor was she related to vaudevillian Al Shean. Al Shean was in fact the Marx Brothers' uncle, but on their mother's who's maden name was Schoëberg. Had Mary been related been related the the Marx's by her surname, she would nit have been related to Al Shean.

According to Glenn Mitchell's book, "The Marx Beothers Encylopedia" (page 33), such a Passover celebration did take place between Zeppo Marx, Jack Benny and the Marks family. According to the book, the Marks ofton entertained travelin vaudevillians in their home. The Marks invited The Marx Brothers to their home to celebrate Passover... Zeppo was the only one of the brothers to accept, but only because he thought he and Jack could get dates with the young Marks daughters who turned out to be too young.

Sadie vs. Sadye

[edit]

The spelling of her name oscillates back and forth between the two -- sometimes in subsequent sentences. What gives? 99.195.162.91 (talk) 04:40, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mary's daughter Joan spells her name Sadie in "Sunday Night at Seven".Sandcherry (talk) 00:40, 17 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The Find A Grave link has it as Sadye, but with no proof such as a birth certificate. So I changed it to Sadie through rest of article for continuity - at least until there is another solid reference. Trista (cannot log in at work)24.176.191.234 (talk) 18:44, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think it can be pretty much conclusive that her name was spelled Sadye since if you check all the Ancestry.com records, thats the way she shows up on the original documents. I will not go through and change it, but someone who has more authority to edit this article should do their own research and then do what is right.173.2.252.128 (talk) 11:54, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

More on the Marx Brothers

[edit]

Why is that Marx brothers box even included near the bottom of the page, and why is Sadie Marks included as a family member, when clearly she is not? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.65.34.235 (talk) 14:58, 16 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It was a leftover from an earlier version of the page that claimed she was a cousin of the Marx Brothers. I've removed it. For future reference, her own autobiography, which was read during a radio interview, dismissed any relationship. Hopefully, there won't be any further confusion on the matter.Nonaeroterraqueous (talk) 05:22, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's Marcowitz on the birth registry. Looksl like the family Anglicized it when she was a child. So it's born Marcowitz. I'm changing it and will cite sources now. --DiamondRemley39 (talk) 12:19, 26 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

cadging free meals

[edit]

The Marxs would look up the name "Marx" in the phonebook and invite themselves over for dinner, claiming to be related. George Burns or Groucho, perhaps, said this on a talk show, maybe the Dick Cavett Show. Go be a diligent student.

Birthdate

[edit]

This article claims that she was born on June 25th, and that line cites an ANB thing that says that she was born on June 22nd. The LA Times thing cited at the bottom of the article about the name on her star being misspelled says that she was born on June 23rd.
