Entries that link to articles about other people
[edit]I deleted three entries that linked to articles about other people. Although the target articles mentione Mary Austin, they articles are primarily about someone else. Bkonrad reverted the entries, claiming that they "meet criteria for inclusion on dab pages". One of them (Mary Brown Austin) now links to her own article, so there's no problem with that. However I disagree that "friend of Freddie Mercury" and "wife of Brewster Kahle" belong on the DAB page. WP:DABRELATED says:
Do not include articles unless the term being disambiguated is actually described in the target article.
The target articles mention Mary Austin, but do not "describe" her in the sense intended by WP:DABRELATED. (Eg Volleyball#Set "defines" a set, but Freddie Mercury and Brewster Kahle do not "define" Mary Austin.)
Is there some other section of WP:DAB that applies? Do you disagree with my interpretation of WP:DABRELATED? Do other editors have an opinion on the matter? Mitch Ames (talk) 23:49, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, I disagree with your interpretation of WP:DABRELATED. Disambiguation is the process of resolving the conflicts that arise when a single term is ambiguous—when it refers to more than one topic covered by Wikipedia articles. The subject of Mary Austin is a topic covered by articles in Wikipedia. WP:DABRELATED is about what not to include -- and specifically not to include terms that are not described in the linked article. I'm neutral on inclusion of the wife of Brewster Kahle, as she barely gets mentioned in the article. But the other is given a fairly full desciption. older ≠ wiser 01:32, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
- Having read MOS:DABMENTION, I concede that they are appropriate entries. However, I suggest that Mary Austin should perhaps have her own section in Freddie Mercury (she seems to have been important enough in his life), to which the DAB entry should link. Otherwise we should at least link to Freddie Mercury#Relationships - the reader should not have to search the entire article to find her. Mitch Ames (talk) 07:06, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
