"Mary, Mary" was written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkees. The lead section of the article should discuss the history of the song and then discuss additional covers of the song. The first version was on an album by Paul Butterfield's band. While the most successful version (chart-wise) was remade by Run-D.M.C., the song was already made notable by the Monkees by appearing on numerous albums and, of course, the very popular television show. This article should reflect the chronological history of the song, not by what one deems the "most notable". --Wolfer68 (talk) 19:11, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The Monkees Version may have been released first, but more important then that fact is the fact that it was not released as a single nor did it make it to any billboard charts. With that said the Run-D.M.C. version is the most recent and most likely the more well known version of the song due to the fact that is was released as a single and the song, along with its music video recieved heavy airplay on the radio and MTV respectivly, you see Mary, Mary would not have a page if not for the Run-D.M.C. version due to the fact that The Monkees version is just a chartless non-notable song, but nontheless I agree that their should be a Monkees section for history purposes, just not the opening segement. The OP is completely correct here. You can't just designate this as a run DMC song, complete with pictures and info to the right making the entry more about Run DMC than the actual song. Whether it was a big hit or not is irrelevant, and as a fixture on almost every single "Monkees" compilation out there I'd dispute any assertion that the song is not a notable part of their catalogue. The DMC dominant elements of this article are completely inappropriate. I'd go a step further and argue that the RunDMC version is not even the same song. About the only thing the two "versions" have in common is the use of the words "Mary Mary" - the music is mostly different, as are the entirety of the remainder of the lyrics. If anything there's small bits of sampling from the original and otherwise it's an entirely different entity. 70.189.154.151 (talk) 03:45, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
