The result of the move request was: No consensus. (non-admin closure) Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:23, 1 October 2019 (UTC)
Marugame, Kagawa → Marugame – Simpler target name that already redirects here SFB 15:59, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
- Support per the previous discussions such as at Talk:Toyonaka#Requested move 25 October 2018 though Talk:Alonnah, Tasmania#Requested move 24 November 2018 failed to gain consensus. The redirect "Marugame" has always pointed here since this was moved in 2004 and GeoNames doesn't show any others and even if there were the population 109,922 city would be primary anyway. - The way things have been going, I suppose there is a chance that this request may be successful, but I have considerable knowledge of Japan and may never have heard of this town. As in the naming of US places, the prefecture name is very helpful here. I don't see a net benefit to this change; concision is one of the WP:NAMINGCRITERIA, but so is recognizability. Toyonaka is several times larger and more well-known than this location, and I don't really feel like Toyonaka is prominent enough to be listed without a prefecture name, either. - Oppose, following up on this, based upon the current language of WP:JPPLACE, which says to use the prefecture except in the case of "world-famous cities familiar to most Westerners." Dekimasuよ! 05:54, 23 September 2019 (UTC)
- I don't see how prominence has much to do with if it needs the prefecture, see this for example of titles that are far more likely to be said to need disambiguation but are at the base name. Crouch, Swale (talk) 08:30, 23 September 2019 (UTC)
- Part of it is likely that coverage of notable topics that might be disambiguated remains sparse, although I agree that we do not disambiguate preemptively. Here, as just one example, we have Marugame Seimen. Neither Marugame, Kagawa nor Marugame Seimen is particularly what normally comes to mind when someone says "Marugame", but I'm guessing that in the end more people are familiar with the latter chain of 1000 stores than with the town of 100,000 people and the Google test doesn't really favor the city either at a glance. Again, I doubt that anyone is much served by the move. Dekimasuよ! 13:02, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
- OK I see Marugame Seimen doesn't have that many less views than the city but it only has 5 WP articles compared to 37 for the city. If there isn't a clear primary topic then "Marugame" should be converted into a DAB which I'd be fine with. Crouch, Swale (talk) 13:17, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
