He was born with the surname Swartz, but his mother remarried when he was 3, and he used his step-father's surname (Martin) as his own surname from a fairly young age, though he may not have changed it from Swartz to Martin officially for some years(?). There is ample evidence in old census records, etc., but I'm not sure whether it's advisable or not to add links to Ancestry.com records (that require free account registration to at least see the transcriptions, and have a payment wall for viewing of the actual documents).
