Clemency by Hugh Carey

[edit]

I believe that Matin Sostre was pardoned by Governor Hugh Carey in December of 1974.

I'm no quite sure if Martin Sostre was pardoned by Governor Hugh Carey in December of 1974, but there is information on what when on before that such as.... "Martin Gonzalez Sostre was well experienced with the injustices committed by this government in the name of justice and law because he had already spent 12 years in jail between 1952-64. In 1957, when his case came up for parole, he took it upon himself to question the composition of the parole board which was all white—so he was not paroled. Between 1960-64, he was in and out of solitary confinement at Attica prison because of his belief in the Islamic Religion. It was through his struggle that finally Islam was allowed in the jail. This kind of injustice continued during his second imprisonment. In 1969, Martin Gonzalez Sostre bought a lawsuit against the state for cruel and unusual punishment, torture in solitary confinement for 373 successive days and other torture like short food rations, dirty bare mattresses and 24 hour day lockup without exercise. As a result of this he was taken out of solitary confinement but still faces the other messed up conditions all brothers and sisters face in the joint." The picture in the article is by Jerry Ross

[edit]

I was going to add that to the photo taken by "Pittore44" but didn't see where to add it. If Pittore44 is Jerry Ross and he doesn't want his name there, nothing needs to be done. OTOH, if the photo was taken by someone who saw the painting somewhere, then there seems to be a copyright violation. There should be a link to Jerry_Ross (painter) in the article. The photo caption would be a good place. Filé gumbo (talk) 13:46, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This is Jerry Ross who painted the portrait and still have it in my possession. I will try to make a link from the caption to my Jerry_Ross (painter). Pittore44 (talk) 16:46, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Note: What was suggested by File gumbo was done. Yet photo of painting was just removed (again!) Why? I will keep asking for it to be reinstated.

I just saw an internet article that indicated that Martin Sostre died earlier this year (2015) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pittore44 (talkcontribs) 01:01, 21 December 2015 (UTC) Pittore44 (talk) 05:37, 16 November 2017 (UTC) Reference #7 http://www.broadwaydemocrats.org/newsletters/September2015.pdf does not seem to relate to Martin Sostre at all. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pittore44 (talkcontribs) 02:52, 4 November 2016 (UTC) Pittore44 (talk) 05:37, 16 November 2017 (UTC) Now Ref#9 about broadway democrats actually contains a poem dedicated to Sostre by his wife Elizabeth. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pittore44 (talkcontribs) 17:54, 7 October 2017 (UTC) Pittore44 (talk) 05:37, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
