There is a state at
[edit]The diagram shows at the start but with no state - no . This is not what is given in the text ( is explicitly there), and the existence of would make most sense since it would enable us to choose $(T_1, X_1)$ by the standard mechanism. Renewal process or reward process?

Other random processes, such as Markov chains, Poisson, and renewal processes, can be derived as special cases of Markov Reward Processes (MRPs)." The first sentence says that MRP stands for Markov renewal process, whereas the second sentence says it stands for Markov reward process, of which Markov renewal process is a special case.
