ACORN connection

[edit]

Why is there no reference to Ritchie's connection to ACORN? I think they endorsed him and gave him money. Isn't this relevant? Syntacticus (talk) 00:45, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Most politicians in statewide offices have received money or endorsements from thousands of individuals and organizations. Other than the fact that this purported connection is being promoted by Mattew Vadum, why should we add material on just one of those contributors?   Will Beback  talk  20:18, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
FYI here is a list of endorsements: [1].   Will Beback  talk  23:06, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the list, Will. It's noteworthy because Ritchie's critics keep tarring him because of his association with ACORN and say it is affecting his behavior, that's why. It doesn't matter for WP purposes whether his (alleged?) ties are in fact influencing him (against Norm Coleman) but the fact that the ties keep coming up again and again makes then relevant. (I'm not saying it needs to be a huge part of the article though, but it is conspicuous by its absence.) Vadum is not the only one bringing this up. There is also:

Peter J. Parisi, Washington Times [[2]] Sean Hannity [[3]] Trent England, Evergreen Freedom Foundation [[4]] This is only a small sample of attacks from the right. It has been open season on Ritchie among the conservative punditry for months. Balance and fairness require at least a mention of this stuff.Syntacticus (talk) 02:51, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The existing article is quite short, so discussions of controversies shouldn't be long either. If we starting noting what radio talk show host say about people in every bio we'd be kept quite busy. The Washington Times piece and the England Op-ed are probably sufficient to support something like, "Ritchie was criticized in conservative media during the 2008 Senate recount for having accepted contributions and an endorsement from ACORN during his 2006 campaign."   Will Beback  talk  03:05, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to expand the coverage of the 2008 elections and the recount in particular ot bring a little more context to the criticism that Ritchie has been receiving from the national punditry. Crumley (talk) 22:37, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good work. That gives it an appropriate context.   Will Beback  talk  03:07, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Busy Year

[edit]

I put back in the line about it being a busy year for the Sectretary of State's office and including a video of the canvassing board meeting as a reference. It would be better to use a transcript, but I couldn't find one yet. The comments of the canvasssing board starting at about minute 19 of the video back up the idea that it was a busy year for the board. Judge Cleary said that this was the first recount of this sort - by which I take it he meant state-wide general election - since 1962 (governor's race I believe). Later, other mentioned how busy the SOS staff has been compared to a normal year. Ritchie also mentioned the fact that there was a state-wide recount of in MN Supreme Court Primary election. The main point is that while recounts do occur during most election cycles, statewide recount are rare. This video also nicely shows the collegiality on the multi-partisan board.
