AfD welcome
[edit]I have recently become aware of this entry and would greatly prefer to opt out (though I know that WP:OPTOUT did not make it). The reason I would like to opt out is threefold:
- I was an early member of Wikiproject Countering Systemic Bias, and I am dismayed to see that the extreme skew here towards content about or of interest to people who look like me doesn't seem to have improved a lot. I think there are tons of academics more notable than me that deserve proper representation (e.g., four random full professors: Joseph Gafaranga, Rose Marie Beck, Birgit Hellwig, Adams Bodomo).
- I am borderline notable at best; the main thing that may make it seem different is that I have an online presence. This is of course precisely what makes systemic bias self-perpetuating: someone being harder to find online is often wrongly equated with someone being less notable.
- There are distracting errors or at least unsourced claims in the article but rather than having folks spend time to correct things and source them, I would want people to spend time researching more notable but underrepresented and minoritized academics. So deletion would be much more expedient.
So, anyone who wants to start an AfD, please be my guest! I won't do it myself because my prior wiki experience (as contributor and admin) has scarred me. Also, for the record, we know the AfD process is biased towards keeping entries on people who look like me, and removing entries on already minoritized people. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ — mark ✎ 10:38, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
- Dear Mark, You are right there is a bias: it is due to the Wikipedia criteria of notability, for instance getting an academic prize. It seems African academics are at a disadvantage there. So Adams Bodomo will not be disputed (2017 ICAS Book Award winner), while Martha Qorro is. Solution: Give them the prizes they deserve? - @Mark Dingemanse Dear Mark, i am sorry to have caused inconvenience. Start an AfD if you like, you have absolutely a right to it. Otherwise, i would welcome corrections as you mentioned distracting errors or at least unsourced claims which of course should not remain unchallenged. Thank you & best wishes, kila la heri, Hansmuller (talk) 09:01, 29 June 2023 (UTC) Wikipedian in residence African Studies Centre Leiden
