Proposal to rename to Mark Davis (basketball, born 1963)
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the proposal was no move. Proposed name is in violation of WP:NCP. JPG-GR (talk) 05:33, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
The reason for this move is to disambiguate this article from another NBA player, Mark Anthony Davis, currently redirected to Mark Davis (NBA). Assuming that the latter-mentioned is more well-known thereby more search-worthy than the former-mentioned, by what conditions affords its primacy over the perceivedly obscure Mark Giles Davis, who also played in the NBA? Mark A. Davis has only two references, one more than the "lesser known" 1980s Davis. Are we catering for a specific hardcore NBA fanbase with Mark A. Davis at the forefront of their minds by tailoring our search conditions, or we catering for the general reader? The current holder (Wknight94) of the status quo of the present title situation appears to have based his naming protocols in accordance with his own subjective view. The general reader would not be compelled to discern such a decidely minutial detail. See examples Marcus Williams (basketball) & Dee Brown (basketball).
Having said that, I'm open to moving this article to "Mark Davis (born 1963)", or something similar, but it should not be redirecting to a page that cedes obscurity, decided by an individual with a personal view, and especially without reaching consensus, which Wknight94 has not even attempted to attain. Thanks. --Downwards (talk) 07:26, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

- Support — the suggested target follows the naming convention; the current title does not. — Twas Now ( talk • contribs • e-mail ) 15:02, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
- Can you point me to the specific page indicating that the suggested target follows the naming convention? Thanks! →Wordbuilder (talk) 16:19, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
- The two examples provided by Downwards (talk · contribs): see Dee Brown (basketball) and Marcus Williams (basketball). Many others exist. — Twas Now ( talk • contribs • e-mail ) 06:15, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
- I'm aware of using something such as "(basketball)" in the title. However, I'm concerned about the "born 1963" part. Just because other such articles exist does not mean they comply with naming conventions. →Wordbuilder (talk) 13:35, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
- Opposed in this form Renaming is still going to leave it messy and asymmetrical. Suggest Mark Davis goes to a two item disambiguation page and name both articles Mark Davis (NBA 19XX-19XX) or, maybe better, Mark Middlename Davis. Ex nihil (talk) 05:35, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
- Oppose. The two examples are not useful. See Talk:Mark Davis (NBA)#Requested move where consensus opposed the invented (basketball, born xxxx) convention. Expecting people to distinguish three basketball-playing Mark Davises based on date of birth is not reasonable. I've no idea when any of my favorite sports people were born! I do however know when they played and what league they played for. Hence:
- No one will need to distinguish. Once you are at the article, the article should clearly describe which one it is. Anyway, does anyone have these players' middle names? That should be the first choice of how we disambiguate each, but if nothing is found, the current format is fine, I guess. — Twas Now ( talk • contribs • e-mail ) 00:11, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
- Per that logic, you could call this article Mark Davis (7438233654) or some other arbitrary unique identifier. Only that's not how WP:NCP works. In fact, take a look at WP:NCP#Middle names and abbreviated names - it says using middle names just for disambiguation is "not advised". —Wknight94 (talk) 02:05, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Mark Davis (1980s NBA player) → Mark Davis (basketball, born 1963) — This Mark Davis is not only known for his playing career in the NBA, most of his achievements came from his playing career in Europe. Also to follow a naming convention which is common for disambiguating NBA players who have same names, such as:
- Bobby Jones (basketball, born 1951) and Bobby Jones (basketball, born 1984)
- Charles Jones (basketball) and Charles Jones (basketball, born 1962)
- Mike Smith (basketball, born 1976), Mike Smith (basketball, born 1963) and Mike Smith (basketball, born 1965)
Please also see the similar discussion on Talk:Mark Davis (NBA). Thanks. — Martin tamb (talk) 17:43, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- While there's no perfect consistency among basketball bios, I would prefer "(basketball, born 1963)", since that seems to be the most common method of disambiguation. Zagalejo^^^ 18:04, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
