new section?
Should a section about recreational boating belong in this article? It would be interesting. Griffinofwales2 (talk) 23:30, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- When would the modern form of recreational boarting have started? That would the the place to place to insert a small section on recreational boating. J. D. Redding 01:29, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
- What would be the definition of recreational boating? Griffinofwales2 (talk) 02:36, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
- Not real sure. Recreational boating? Recreational boat? Those could help. J. D. Redding 13:27, 11 June 2009 (UTC) (Ps., if it goes back far enough [I'm thinking Egyptians maybe], then a mention on the ancient history page could be needed also.)
- Ptolemy IV (220 BC) had a floating palace. Does that count? Griffinofwales2 (talk) 13:54, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
- That would fit better in the main article of 'ancient maritime history', JIMO. But there there could be a mention on this page of modern recreational boating. J. D. Redding 17:57, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
See also/External links
I have basically removed the whole see also section. This was simply acting as a random list of random articles related to the maritime world. It duplicates Category:Maritime history and all of the sub-categories and it was therefore not needed. I have also removed the external links farm on the article, again due to it being a random list of museums and related organisations. I have tried to leave a few pertinent ones. Maritime history categories
There is currently a proposal at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2012_February_24#Category:Portuguese_maritime_history to rename Category:Portuguese maritime history to Category:Maritime history of Portugal. As the arguments laid out there may have implications on current and future categorization structures on maritime history articles, people interested in this topic might have an interest expressing their opinion on this matter. Speed of historical ship types
Nowhere is mentioned how fast the different types of ships go. According to José Andia y Varela (1774 DC), the traditional Polynesian catamaran (built atleast since the 7th century, ie with vessels such as Te Ivi-o-Atea, Te Ara-ki'Avaiki )seemed to have been faster than even the European ships. According to one of Cooks men, these traditional catamarans went at 3 miles an hour, while their vessels only went 2 miles an hour.[1]
Add some info on the speed of the different types of vessels. 91.182.55.169 (talk) 08:35, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
