Creation of Separate Page?
The primary is now being called for Newman. Is it time for a separate page as she is now the Democratic nominee? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rivere123 (talk • contribs) 02:09, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Rivere123, I don't see a call in the race. Cite your sources. – Muboshgu (talk) 02:14, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Decision Desk/Vox have called it. If it is better we can wait until the AP call.Rivere123 (talk
- AP is better, but Decision Desk is credible. If the AP calls it, I'd say its timr yo restore the most recent standalone version and fix it up. We have the start to an article. – Muboshgu (talk) 02:25, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

What is meant when you describe someone as a "strong Democrat"? The term isn't used in the source. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 00:37, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
- Agreed. I went ahead and deleted. Innisfree987 (talk) 04:55, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
The statement "After attending Marquette University for a year and a half, she transferred to University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree." is not backed up by the reference provided:[4]Newman, Marie (March 18, 2020). "How Marie Newman Unseated An Eight-Term Illinois Congressman". Elle (Interview). Interviewed by Rose Minutaglio. Retrieved March 18, 2020. The article does not make any reference to a BA degree. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:644:0:1E60:7466:E1B4:E95D:48D2 (talk) 18:17, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
Expanded from redirect before I saw this
I didn't realize a previous version had been deleted. I hope the new version is acceptable. This primary has attracted interest nationwide (even internationally, see article in the Independent), and Newman's nonprofit is a national organization. --MopTop (talk) 18:47, 20 February 2018 (UTC)
Defeat of Lipinski
It appears that Marie Newman may have defeated Dan Lipinski in his bid for renomination for Illinois's 3rd congressional district. If that is the case, this might be enough to warrant an article. A bit crystally, but with this being a strongly Democratic district for the U.S. House, if she is the nominee, she will very probably be the next representative of this district. - Master of Time, "it appears" is WP:CRYSTAL. The primary isn't called yet. – Muboshgu (talk) 02:14, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Agreed on the creation of a new page. Press coverage means people will also likely be wondering who Marie Newman is very soon. Merge our discussion above with this one? Rivere123 (talk) 02:22, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Rivere123, I responded above. – Muboshgu (talk) 02:27, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- There's a reason I said may, not will, although if I am correct, it will be called before too long anyway. Master of Time (talk) 02:28, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Master of Time, but as of this time stamp, the AP has not called it. – Muboshgu (talk) 02:38, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Muboshgu: It is official now. Master of Time (talk) 04:20, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Master of Time, yes, yes it is. – Muboshgu (talk) 04:21, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

Education vs. Alma Mater
@Therequiembellishere: I would be more-than-happy to participate in a discussion about education vs. alma mater in infoboxes, though this discussion on my talk page has gone unanswered. And this edit summary is surely a WP:PERSONALATTACK or at least wildly innapropriate. KidAd (talk) 18:39, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- It might be useful to document Newman's higher ed experience first. At the moment we say she "attended ... Marquette University before transferring to University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree." The citation to Rewire News says only that Newman says she "worked her way through college at Marquette University with a work-study job cleaning up after Food Services." UW-Madison isn’t mentioned. Let’s nail down the facts before going to war over infobox language. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 19:46, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Her campaign bio HERE says: "To cover my college tuition at Marquette University, I signed up for a work-study program, cleaning at the Food Service and hitting the books in between. I then attended the University of Wisconsin, where I graduated in four years, while also completing five internships." Sounds to me like her time at Marquette wasn’t much. But it’s unclear to me. And I’d prefer a non-campaign source. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 20:02, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- Finally a clearer account in Elle, which I’ll use. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 20:06, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

- Now to the "substance" of this dispute. The use of the F word was wrong, though I read it as an expression of exasperation as in WTF rather than harassment as in "you fuck". As I see it, the only reason to insist on Alma mater is to exclude Newman's time at Marquette from the infobox. But 1.5 years is not negligible and the infobox is not so dense with data that we need to consider ways to minimize its content. Alma mater is also ill suited IMHO to less traditional patterns of education. Newman’s experience in higher ed was not limited to one institution, not limited to one institution that awarded her a degree. Why disguise that fact? Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 20:30, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
Politician in lead vs. political candidate
For some reason, editors keep adding 'politician' to the lead. The subject is a political candidate, not having ever held political office. To be considered a politician, one must hold the office, not simply be the candidate in the runoff. --Kbabej (talk) 20:43, 18 March 2020 (UTC)
- That’s quite an authoritative statement. But plenty of sources allow for those seeking office, e.g., Politician, or "a person who is professionally involved in politics, especially as a holder of or a candidate for an elected office". You may prefer a more restrictive use of the term, but your "one must" is hard to defend I think. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 00:24, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
