Use of blockquotes
[edit]I have use blockquotes more than I normally would for 2 reasons in this article. 1) in the war of 1812 section, much of the secondary/tertiary material written on Maria, repeats the fallacy that she hid her identity and went into battle as a man. The 3 quotes are specifically placed to counter this idea. The first, sets out the typical (misogynistic) view of 1930-50, the 2nd, an older more liberal view from a female in the late 19th century and the 3rd, direct evidence to dispute it.
The Shanly interview is so unique to people of this period (early colonial wartime women). It would be impossible to say better, or explain in a more persuasive way Mrs Hill's memory of the war. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ian Furst (talk • contribs) 2013-08-07T06:49:03
- It is a lot of block quoting. Why not summarize and cite what is said in the quotes? It would look more 'WP-like' and reduce block quoting. - thewolfchild 18:09, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

This article needs lots of work
[edit]We need less editorializing, more summary of actually known facts. Also We need a little less coatracking. We need a huge reduction of quoting from sources, and more summary of known details. Facts that are of dubious origin from people who know little of what happened would probably go better in footnotes. We also probably have excessive detail on the Governor General's death just after he was at her inn.John Pack Lambert (talk) 12:31, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
