Spalding's accusation
[edit]The line 'it was discredited by a Yale University historian in 1901' refers to an article in the Catholic Sentinel which itself provides no further references. As it stands the line is not NPOV. Zwart (talk) 16:30, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
- The reference is: Edward Gaylord Bourne, 'The myth of Marcus Whitman', in The American Historical Review 6.2 (January 1901), pp. 276-300. However, this article deals mainly with Whitman's trip to the East in 1842 and his influence in bringing about immigration into Oregon from 1843 on (thus 'saving Oregon for America'). It does not enter into a critical discussion of the Whitman massacre. Zwart (talk) 18:47, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
- It is also discredited in Clifford M. Drury's 1936 biography of Spalding pp. 354-359.[2] Manannan67 (talk) 19:20, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
He was also a preacher in the missionaries at that time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.65.237.214 (talk) 22:37, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Oliver W. Nixon wrote a book about him and also a pamphlet for the Whitman Memorial Fund but I don't see any note of these works here? FloridaArmy (talk) 17:39, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
