Notability

[edit]

So, to be honest, I'm not convinced that the subject warrants its own article as per the Wikipedia:Notability guideline. Before we clarify this, I think there is little point to go ahead with the detailed GA criteria review. The General notability guideline requires that "Significant coverage" addresses the topic directly and in detail, so that no original research is needed to extract the content. Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention, but it does not need to be the main topic of the source material. I've read the article and its sources, as far as I can tell none of the sources covers the subject "directly" or "in detail". The best we have is that he's mentioned in regards to the declaration as co-Caesar with his older brother, as well as his death and the fact that his father does not mourn it too much. Are there sources that discuss Marcus Annius Verus Caesardirectly, e.g. a standalone biography of him, or even a page or two focusing on his life?

The specific notability guideline for people has this: That person A has a relationship with well-known person B, such as being a spouse or child, is not a reason for a standalone article on A (unless significant coverage can be found on A); relationships do not confer notability. The subject in this article seems to have no significant coverage on his own, and being the son of Marcus Aurelius, or brother of Commodus is not a valid reason for his notability. The fact that he died at age 7 make it unlikely that he has done anything worthy of note. HaEr48 (talk) 05:18, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@HaEr48: Please note that Marcus being appointed to the office of Caesar fulfills WP:POLITICIAN, despite his young age. The office of Caesar, which was mostly similar to "designated heir", was second only to the emperor, and carried significant influence with it (although this did fluctuate in time), even if Marcus only nominally ruled as Caesar, due to his young age. While little attention is paid to him by history, something common of Roman children who died young (of Marcus Aurelius' 13 children, only 5 outlived him), he still gains notability from his office. -- Iazyges Consermonor Opus meum 06:23, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Iazyges: Thanks for the response. Fair enough, I will proceed with the full review. HaEr48 (talk) 18:00, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Saw the note on WP:GAN, and I agree; merely having been made, effectively, the joint heir apparent of a nation makes him notable, even though his life was quite short. Courcelles (talk) 18:41, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Full Review

[edit]

See WP:GACR for numbering scheme

  1. Generally well written but see specific suggestions below
  2. Verifiable, well covered by inline citation, no OR or copyvio detected. I've spot checked some of the sources and they check out.
  3. Broad enough. It's on the short side, but given that the subject died at 7, I doubt there were other notable facts missed by the article. It stays focused on the topic.
  4. Neutral.
  5. Stable
  6. Appropriately illustrated by image, which has an appropriate license.

Specific suggestions

[edit]
  • Marcus Annius Verus Caesar was the son of Marcus Aurelius ... => Marcus Annius Verus Caesar was the son of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius …
  •  Done
  • As per MOS:OPENPARA birth date (at least year) should be mentioned in lead
  •  Done
  • IMO, it’s a good idea to mention age at death (7 years) in lead because the very young death is an important fact about this person
  •  Done
  • Consider adding an infobox, so that it’s easy to locate basic facts
  •  Done
  • Verus and Commodus were both made caesars => Verus and his brother Commodus were …
  •  Done
  • The last sentence of the "Life" section, which reads "Aurelius did have his name inserted ...": It's (1) too long, please split into multiple sentences. (2) if possible briefly explain what the Salii are, e.g. say "the ritual songs sung by the priests called the Salii"
  •  Done
