Notability, sourcing, tone, and possible COI

I have just added some tags to this article, and want to explain.

First, this article is sourced entirely from the artist's website (apart from the reference to Barthes, which does not mention the artist). As it stands, therefore, the article does not even attempt to establish that the artist is notable in Wikipedia's sense. Unless some independent reliable sources are added, the article is likely to get deleted as non-notable. The language of the article, while not exactly like an advertisement (which is why I haven't tagged it as "written like an advert") is nevertheless promotional: it is very much what an artist would want to say about themselves and their work. It is thus inappropriate for a Wikipedia article. For example: "This apparently simple yet highly charged conceptual work holds within it, strong statements and criticism about art, photography and the position of an artist in society, including within the art and photography fields ruled by market transactions of selling and buying views on/ of the world." If somebody wholly unconnected with Chaves has published this sentence in a reliable place somewhere, then a Wikipedia article may summarise it, or even quote it (with a citation to that published source). Otherwise it does not belong in any Wikipedia article. Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, only in what independent people have published about them.

I observe that this article is mostly the work of two editors, Laouza1985 and Pedro Kiua, and I want to ask you both, are you connected with Chaves? (My reasons for asking this: 1) Both of you have edited only this article; 2) Kiua's edit summary "its finished. our draft is ready to publish."; and 3) Kiua's question at the Teahouse about how to make the name appear a certain way in a search.) If you are, you need to read about conflict of interest. Further, if you are in any way paid by Chaves (whether directly employed, or contracted to produce this article) you must follow the steps in paid editing.

I think it is quite likely that Chaves is notable; but I have not managed turn up any sources online that are independent of him. (There are some in respectable places such as this; but that is clearly based on a press release from the gallery, and so is not independent). If some appropriate sources are not added to the article (and the article rewritten to be based on what the sources say, not on what Chaves says) it is likely to get deleted. --ColinFine (talk) 17:19, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Reliable source

My name is Amanda Abi Khalil and I am an independent international art curator, working with contemporary art. I am in Brazil on a curatorial research trip and I am very interested in Brazilian art. I did a studio visit with Marcos Chaves and think that his practice has a lot to contribute to the aesthetics and practice of contemporary art. This is the first wiki entry I write and I am planning to do that on a few Lebanese and Brazilian artists I am interested in. Kiua helped me technically in understanding the language and technicalities of wikipedia and this entry is solely our initiative. In fact the artist himself is not aware about the page. I very much appreciate your feedback on the jargon, I did write all this entry myself with my own curatorial words. I will now review the tone to make it sound less promotional, although there is absolutely no intention of that at all and we shall remove the links to the artist' website if this is considered as unreliable source. Marcos Chaves is reputable and we will make sure to add links to other type of sources like articles about his work that we can find in academic papers or online media. Any help, advice or recommendation is very helpful. I use wikipedia a lot as a curator and had this initiative to start contributing to this platform with my expertise in contemporary art and would like to do that for more living artists. Wiki looks like a simple platform but I am still navigating with Kuia's help the philosophy and modus operandi. Is there any way that I can register myself as a reliable contributor / author?

We would like the issue about this page to be resolved so we can take it online. Any further advice / comments is highly appreciated.

About Chaves and Me

Hi, I'm Pedro Kiua, co-author of the article on Marcos Chaves here at wikipedia. Amanda asked me for help to write together because I was a student of Chaves and I know her works and history well. Amanda and I are not being paid by Marcos Chaves to do this, our motivation is only our admiration and respect for his work. I understand the problems that the article still has and we will work together to resolve them. Many of the academic texts on and reviewing Marcos Chaves' works need to be linked to external links to the artist's own page.
