[edit]

[1] This biographical article needs additional citations for verification. Please help by adding reliable sources. In order to add citations by reliable sources I have added the comments by Karl Popper, René Thom and Carl Woese that have been published in the back-cover of Barbieri’s book “The Semantic Theory of Evolution” (1985). Please find below and in attachment copies of the front-cover and back-cover of that book. Other two citations have been added from the papers by Stefan Kuhn+Jannie Hofmeyer and by Gérard Battail (papers cited in the article’s References).

[2] This article may contain improper references to self-published sources. The Barbieri’s books and papers that are mentioned in the article have been published by Cambridge University Press, Springer, Biological Theory and Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. The same books and papers have also been cited in Barbieri’s personal website, but this website is only a subsequent deposit, NOT their publishing source.

[3] This article is an autobiography… It may need editing to conform to Wikipedia’s neutral point of view policy. The article is a condensed scientific biography where Barbieri’s main experimental results and theoretical concepts are reported in a neutral way, without value judgments. In order to underline this point, an extended biography of Barbieri written by Don Favareau and published in “Essential Readings” (2010), pp. 751–755, has been cited in the article’s References.

[4] The previous version of the article contained a statement by Nigel Williams that has been removed because it is not correct. The statement in question (“the basic unit of life is the sign, not the molecule”) does appear in Williams’ article but its author was Jesper Hoffmeyer, not Marcello Barbieri.

[edit]

In my previous version I have introduced comments by Karl Popper, René Thom and Carl Woese because I was asked to add more citations, but apparently it did not help. I have therefore removed those comments and tried to describe my theoretical work in a more objective way. I have also added, as requested, new categories. With this I have done all I could and if the article is still not satisfactory I can only hope that somebody else may be able to improve it. Thank you.
