Name?

[edit]

I think that this article should be named Mannahill, as it is called in old newspapers and nowadays on maps, the local hotel and railway station. If there are no objections I will move it. Cgoodwin (talk) 03:28, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, just reverted your edit on this place- official name determines, per edit summary. Not sure of historical references so have left in the article Regards (Crusoe8181 (talk) 11:58, 24 May 2011 (UTC)).[reply]

Answer on your talk page. Cgoodwin (talk) 00:30, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A check of the Geoscience Australia sites came up with the following result for Mannahill which had 34 hits while Manna Hill produced only 18 hits. Mannahill is the named used in old newspapers and is nowadays used on maps, and this is what is painted on the local hotel and railway station (see the untouched photo). Hello, bit slow getting back to you here has the correct official names for the locality and railway station. The Mannahill name almost certainly arises from the original railway station naming at a time when they were fanatical about using single word names, Keonpark, Wattleglen in Melbourne for instance. I would guess at the name being Manna Hill from the 1940s when SA tidied and formalised quite a few placenames, but, as you say, plenty of refs to Mannahill, just not the correct name now. Hello, again- 2011 postcodes here, type in 5440. Have now decided Manna Hill from about 2003 when the state got around to putting boundaries around places outside local council areas. No question PO was always Mannahill (as is now in the article) and the railway station and the pub presumably still is. A search of Trove shows both names throughout its history (a preference for Mannahill) and often Manna-hill as another alternative!. Worth a paragraph in the article, if we can track down precisely how long it has been Manna Hill. Cheers (Crusoe8181 (talk) 07:14, 27 May 2011 (UTC)).[reply]
On 26 April 2011 - the village entry signs, railway station, police station and hotel were all still using Mannahill (sic). The BOM also still uses Mannahill in its reports. Guess that you will have to take a trip out there to convince the locals of the spelling change. What on earth makes you think that Mannahill is incorrect?? It looks to me as though the variations were the result of computer spelling check made in a city office far removed from Mannahill. Cheers Cgoodwin (talk) 06:33, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have reverted to Mannahill as I can find no reliable refs to Manna Hill other than the dubious one used in the cities. For example the Geoscience Australia sites could not even correctly spell accommodation with its ref to Manna Hill (sic). The ABS has not even recorded some towns which have several hundred voters. My own hometown is mis-pronounced by strangers and is often confused with another town, so I know how these errors creep in. Let this not be another example of the BS hoax article, Geier hitch, that first appeared on Wikipedia and was later deleted. A quick check has revealed that Geier hitch still has about 3,360 hits on the web.Cgoodwin (talk) 23:34, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
