No, a CTAF in the U.S. isn't ever mandatory (as far as I know) — it's the equivalent of an ATF in Canada. You're required to call an MF just like you're required to call a tower when flying into a class B or C airport in the U.S.; the only difference is that you talk to an FSS specialist instead of a controller. In Canada, pilots have been fined or had their licenses temporarily suspended for flying into an MF airport without using the frequency. David 12:20, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
