Notability

[edit]

M&TC is the #3 player in the growing industry of private prisons in the US. It received a significant amount of secondary source coverage in 2010, when three convicted murderers escaped from one of its prisons. It is one of those companies which is more important than you would suspect, because most of its work is done under government banners, with the credit going to politicians and government bureaucrats. Thundermaker (talk) 13:28, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can you provide a independent source for that #3 player claim. Codf1977 (talk) 13:38, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is the third largest, after Corrections Corporation of America and GEO Group, both of which are far larger. Activist (talk) 21:18, 16 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So far the secondary sources I've seen make that claim are all citing the company website. So for now my answer to that is no. Thundermaker (talk) 14:16, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I found a source in an Obit for Robert L. Marquand in the L.A. Times. A reporter handled the story. Activist (talk) 09:13, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I can find a source, if editors are uncomfortable. I've seen one quite recently that provided percentages of populations in prisons owned or managed, with MTC well ahead of the remaining competitors. Part of this has been due to industry consolidation as GEO and CCA have been buying smaller, sometimes financially or otherwise troubled corporations. `Activist (talk) 21:18, 16 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I found this, which appears to be a trade website. Thundermaker (talk) 14:31, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Has the feel of press release - look at the contact details at the end, it is good give-away. Codf1977 (talk) 14:34, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. #1 is Corrections Corporation of America, #2 is GEO Group (formerly Wackenhut), both publicly-traded companies who have their own articles. #3 may be Cornell Companies. I'll remove the #3 claim. Their self-reported facility count (17) is less prone to error though. Thundermaker (talk) 14:53, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No real need to remove. The only minor competitors, Correctional Services Corporation and Cornell (Corrections) Companies were purchased by GEO Group four years ago or longer. Activist (talk) 21:18, 16 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Thundermaker, PaulinSaudi, Lockley, WhisperToMe, IronGargoyle, Anbu121, and Acroterion: (USER:Codf1977, formerly actively involved here, is deceased since 2011) I found a cite in the Boise Weekly about MTC being the 3rd largest for-profit prison operator in the U.S. Of course, the reporter could have gotten that from the company website without counting or finding an independent cite. However, it should be noted that their website now claims 24 prisons, though one will be closed by the end of the year. I doubt if it's an accurate number, but I'll get around to checking it out. Also, some of you have been concerned for years about chronic COI edits to the article. I've addressed that at the bottom of the TALK page. Finally, the DOJ spent 4 1/2 years prosecuting the escapees and their accomplice, tried to get a death penalty verdict against him, and the jury hung 9:3 in favor, so he got life. I estimate the trial and incarceration costs to the taxpayer were upward of $10 million. Activist (talk) 04:33, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Almost a year has gone by since the escape, and MTC is still mentioned regularly in news search results for "private prison". [1] [2] [3] [4] Since GEO and Cornell merged, it may actually be #3 now, but I still can't verify. Is this media coverage enough notability to remove the tag? Thundermaker (talk) 23:03, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

MTC is still in the news somewhat. The ringleader of the Golden Valley/Kingman, AZ, escape on 7/20/10 was convicted on 10/7/13 of murder in Albuquerque. A jury will begin hearing testimony on 10/21 regarding whether the death penalty will be levied. Activist (talk) 21:18, 16 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of interest editing

[edit]

I noticed that the first (only?) editor vandalizing the article's page is working for MTC. He has edited the article 15 times between February 21, 2012 and May 19, 2015. Activist (talk) 09:13, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

MTC spokesperson Issa Arnita is again making wholesale COI edits to his company's article. Starting with doing so from this IP#:

Whois Lookup for IP 198.140.7.254, Detail IP Location in United States country, Region Americas - Northern America, state, Salt Lake City city, Coordinates map have Latitude 40.6247 and Longitude -111.7123.

...and 20 more, but logging in each time under his own name, that same day, the last being:

Reviewing old edits, I note that Issa Arnita made wholesale deletions in July 2012. When they were undone, his colleague, Celeste MacDonald did the same, blanking sections. She disappeared from Wikipedia after being confronted. Neither of these editors has had a USER TALK page. Here's her bio, VP of Communications for MTC for almost nine years:

Celeste McDonald Vice President, Corporate Communications Ms. McDonald was named vice president, corporate communications in 2008. Prior to that, she served as the vice president of government and community relations and center director at the Potomac Job Corps Center. She developed staff training programs while serving as MTC’s organizational development director.

It seems that Issa.arnita (talk · contribs) is a WP:SPA, having only ever edited this article. Moreover, he most likely has a WP:COI, having the same name as the director of corporate communications of MTC. Thundermaker (talk) 21:53, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
500 North Marketplace Drive City: Centerville There have existed requests for citations for this redundant claim that just had their second birthday, pertaining to this lack of supplying a WP:RS

As the nation's largest Job Corps operator [citation needed],

The MTC spokesperson, Issa Arnita, of WP:SPA notoriety, is regularly editing this article. If he can't produce a reliable source for his and MTC's claim, it shouldn't remain graven in stone, I would think, so I deleted it at last. Arnita signed in after Thanksgiving weekend on Monday morning, Nov. 28, 2016, under an IPN located at 500 North Marketplace Drive, Centerville Utah at 9:32 a.m., then added another 19 edits under his own name/WP:SPA by 10:29. Here's the results of an IPN origin search:

Controversies section needs editing

[edit]

Some of these topics are covered in too much detail here, and belong better in articles about the facilities themselves. This section should summarize the material presented at more length elsewhere. I understand the desire to ensure this is public information, but it can be summarized. We also might want to think about a different title. Murders and suicide, poor conditions at prisons are not controversies, but problems. Federal lawsuits and civil rights lawsuits are more than controversies. Wilkinson County Correctional Facility, MS

[edit]

Font page USA Today, July 5 2019. Will try to add it was n but it looks like some structural work is required. Noting that the facility does not currently seem to be mentioned, and yet is reliably reported to be run by gangs. Elinruby (talk) 21:05, 7 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
