Tense

It seems a contradiction for this article to say, for example, the region has a diverse fauna (present tense), but then to say it is extinct (suggesting that the past or perfect tense would be more appropriate). In light of the permanent nature of extinction, wouldn't it be better to saw the region had a diverse fauna, or supported many sepcies, etc.? --Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 22:42, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In popular culture

I think the article needs either an expansion on the kinds of mammals, or a section on popular culture: after all, Pirates are mammals too, and we wouldn't want Wikipedia to discriminate on the basis of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, or chosen profession, would we?
