Catch phrase

I thought I remembered "Mama" having some sort of catch phrase, like most sitcom stars of the time, but I can't for the life of me remember what it might have been. I came to this article looking for it, but it's not here. Anyone remember a catch phrase from this show? And if so, could you work it into the areticle? Formatting issues

The current formatting of this article has, in my opinion, presented a problem. The article originally had sub-headers for each sections. Evidently that was terribly confusing for readers and one IP user and now, User:AmericanDad86 have created pseudo-headings for the "ratings and cancellation" sections. This goes against WP:ACCESSIBILITY#Headings which specifically says not to create such headings as some readers' computers cannot properly format this kind of mark-up (mine included). This doesn't help readability or "harmony" and having two, identically named sections seems redundant (especially since there seems to be a disagreement as to whether the show was canceled in 1990 or if Lawrence quit the show). I propose we create two sections for the article - one for the NBC years and one for the first-run syndication years and do away with the pseudo-headings per the above guidelines. A proper sub-heading can be used to explain the ratings and subsequent cancellation by NBC and the rest of the material can be included under the First-run syndication heading. I've reverted to standard formatting until this dispute is resolved. I will say that I think the article has too many headers, but trying to use oddball formatting is the wrong solution.—Kww(talk) 15:59, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Bubba and Iola

In the Season 3 DVD set there is a great detailing about the transfer of Mama's Family from NBC to syndication. There is a section devoted especially to the characters added for syndication and, of course, they are Bubba Higgins and Iola Boylan (or so this Wikipedia article states). In the section dedicated to Iola, it says her last name is Boylen not Boylan. The spelling with the "e" seems to be more correct, because this is the way it is pronounced. As for Bubba, what was his real name? In The Carol Burnett Show sketches of "The Family", he was always spoke of as Bubba, which brings me to the inclusion that Bubba's real name was "Bubba". I was especially convinced of this after viewing "The Family" sketch when Ed and Eunice Higgins and Mama Harper go to Bubba's school and even his teacher speaks of him as "Bubba". Poll to "keep" or "remove" film clarification

There is an edit in dispute on the Mama's Family article between myself and User:Leopea: I would like to keep "film article" or at least "film" in parenthesis beside the name "Eunice" in the opening so that it's clear there exists an article for the film as opposed to the character. User Leopea seems to think it speaks for itself just because the sentence in question is about the made-for-TV movie.

I myself had no idea we had an article on the film until yesterday, nearly a year after the film article's creation, and I am a regular editor of this article. I thought the "Eunice" links were all links to an article for the character. Just for clarification purposes, I thought there was no harm in having film in parenthesis next to the name, but I have been repeatedly challenged by User:Leopea. The user keeps saying there is no confusion.

Given that he himself created the film article and thus knows of its existence, I really don't feel it's fair for him to be the judge of whether or not there's confusion. I feel it's fairer for me to make the call because I've had no part in the film article's existence and pressed that link to be directed to an article on the character. So now I am creating this poll to see whether or not we should keep or remove "film article."

I'd also like to make note that, for the most part, only 2 users have edited the "Eunice" article, further giving the impression that people probably aren't viewing the page for reason they believe it's an article on the character.

Keep - based upon my reasons listed above.

Southern nature of the show?

I was wondering if the verbiage about "Raytown, Mississippi" and the "southern nature" of the show could be removed. I live in Blue Springs, MO which - like Raytown, MO - is a KC satellite town in Jackson County. The statement is just goofy. I've lived in the South (South Carolina) and Midwest (Missouri) and this show doesn't seem anymore southern than it does midwestern. Plus people who actually live in Missouri tend to think of it as a tweener state with southern and midwestern traits; if you've ever watched the Jason Bateman series "Ozark", that show takes place in Missouri but has a southern vibe. Origin Confusion

The article states that Burnett repeatedly encouraged Lawrence to accept the deal to star in the show proposed by Joe Hamilton, which suggests she'd be happy when Lawrence did. But later it states that Burnett had her own idea for a show about Mama and Eunice, and Lawrence shocked her by saying she'd just signed with Joe Hamilton, and Burnett felt betrayed. There needs to be some explanation in one place or the other as to why Burnett had such a strong and unpredictable (to Lawrence) reaction. Tysto (talk) 14:47, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
