Does this article needs clean up?

Hi all, I might be wrong, but I vote for a huge clean up of this article. There is information here that is off the limits of its title. I am personally voting to keep "Maltese euro design" and "Design selection process" sections. Everything else is interesting, but not relevant, maybe can go to another article, but should be gone from here. Any opinions before I start removing? Miguel.mateo (talk) 13:41, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Although some of this information is a little off topic it is still interesting. unless there is another article to move it to I see no reason why it should be removed. I agree that some of the sections would be better suited in a different article but it would be tragic to loose information for that cause.Kevin hipwell (talk) 22:35, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

How about a new article, Malta and the euro? At the moment there is no country with both a x euro coins and a x and the euro article, but if we have relevant information for both - as we clearly do here - then there's no reason that I can see why we shouldn't have both. Pfainuk's idea was kind off what I was thinking off. As I said, the topics are interested, but this is turning more into "Malta and the euro" than "Maltese euro coins". Pfainuk I don't think the name Malta and the euro is really suited, if we were to follow Wikipedia:Naming conventions#Use of "and" then the name you suggest would indicate that it covers both the euro currency and the country Malta which it does not.

I think if the sections were to be moved they should be expanded and given independent articles rather than be clumped in yet another irrelevant article. We should leave the sections in this article until they have grown large enough to have their own articles, also they currently give this article a bit of substance, until this article is expanded or until the sections are expanded I don't see the need to kick them out.Kevin hipwell (talk) 23:38, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

I am kind of confused now. I strongly think that the section "Euro Centres in Malta and Gozo" is no longer relevant and should be removed. I also believe that big portion of the section "Euro Changeover and Adoption" is a bit off the article, giving just interesting information, maybe move it to a "See also" section or something similar. All the extra information like "Mintage Quantities" and "Collector Coins" is interesting and may stay, maybe we need to add it to the other countries as well ;) However, I strongly suggest that this article do not cover every single commemorative coin issued by Malta, for that we have another article. The articles x euro coins are universally about the design of the euro coins for those countries only. They may list and/or display examples of commemoratives- both the circulation and non-circulation types from their respective parent articles- but details should be reserved for those articles and not the x euro coins articles. I would propose creating an article entitled Euro adoption process or Process of euro adoption, which would detail the process for all EMU and future EMU members. The sections Design Selection Process, Euro Changeover and Adoption, Euro Centres in Malta and Gozo and parts of Collector Coins should be moved to the Maltese section of the new article, along with all the images, except those of the 8 normal coin designs and any future images pertaining to commemorative coins. In the interest of perhaps improving on perfection, "Mintage Quantities" should be in all x euro coins articles. Any article offshoots from subject expansion can come from the new article, not the x euro coins articles. I agree that the superfluous information presently in Maltese euro coins is valuable, but I also agree that it does not fit within the purview of the article.

In my view, the x euro coins articles are complete. Expanding Malta's euro coins article, while the others do not need the additional information is not conducive to maintaining consistency. All x euro coins articles should use Austrian_euro_coins as a template, since this article represents the beginning and end of the idea behind creating the 18 x euro coins articles (plus the future euro coins articles) in the first place.Cheers. 1. The new article names and what they entail.
2. Including the mintage quantities on all x euro coin articles.
3. Adding links to the new articles via a see also section.

From what I read Miguel.mateo you seem to also agree.

Hey, I am the author of yesterday’s article – first of all please bear with me because im still new to this, especially HTML language, im trying to learn it by observing. Maybe its true that some of the details are off topic however I would prefer to have some off topic details (but in a way related) rather than ‘a 2 words page’. I would maybe suggest to change the title of the page, I believe it would be nice to have the whole history of the Maltese euro coins from conception to after - Also the collectors part, I believe it’s a very important part and that would also attract lot of euro collectors to the site and ultimately they will contribute to wikipedia as well. May the title should be rephrased to Malta and the Euro – and keep the original part for the Maltese euro designs page. Also its nice that your asking before cleaning up the site, because after spending a while afternoon trying to improve the page and then I come this morning and I find nothing , would have really turned me off from the site. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Melitikus (talk • contribs) 07:10, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Your contribution to this article is valued by all, however, it is not the best place for it. Changing the name of the article is out of the question and placing 'off topic details' in the article conflicts with a number of Wikipedia policies. As Kevin hipwell correctly stated, "Malta and the Euro" would not adhere to the Wikipedia Naming conventions (There are only a few accepted exceptions to this general rule within the Euro pages).

As a side note- please remember that you can use the 'Show preview' button before saving the page. Also, there are a number of reasons that 'Talk' pages exist on Wikipedia- not the least of which is to discuss major changes to an article before carrying them out. Hence Miguel.mateo's initial question before removing content. It would be helpful if you could also respond with equal consideration. The Edit summary box is not a requirement, but in the future, please use it so everyone knows from which direction you are coming and in which direction you are going. Cheers. I propose we carry out the initial idea to create a separate article, which contains the content of this article falling outside the original intent and established conformity of the article. However, I propose only one named article, divided into country sections and then relevant sub-sections. My impression was that we already have articles detailing the process of euro adoption in each country in Enlargement of the eurozone, and Introduction of the euro. I suppose it could be argued that there are two parts to this - the decision (which is already made by the treaties of accession in most cases) and the implementation. But if we create an article such as Process of euro adoption, we do need to make sure we're not simply duplicating those existing articles. Beyond that, and noting that I think we'll quickly want to farm off sections of that article to individual articles anyway (with 33 current, unofficial or potential members we have the potential for a very long article), I'm happy with the three points noted above. I don’t understand why you’re saying that what is written in the page is irrelevant to the topic – isnt that page entitle “Maltese Euro Coins”? so I assume the history how it was created, how it entered into circulation in malta, events that happened amd associated with, its mintage quantities and all the Maltese euro commemorative coins that Malta will issue in the future, I believe are all relevant to the Maltese Euro Coins and nice to find all the history of it under one page, of course with sub-headings.--Melitikus (talk) 10:27, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Melitikus, first of all, welcome to Wikipedia. I know for sure your contributions will be very valuable; the majority doing these contributions are also collectors. Please try to understand (and you will hear this from a lot of people) that this is an encyclopaedia, and as such opinions from others should be taken into account. I personally started this discussion and have put several messages in your talk page. We finally got your attention, so as you can see, we have not removed anything from the article, but simply discussing how to improve it.

There are a set of articles related to the euro. All countries with euro coins or euro coins design have an article "xxxx euro coins", same as Malta. All articles are following a same standard; this is the reason why we consider that the extra information in the Maltese article should be somewhere else. In these articles you will find very little information about those countries commemorative coins since there are other articles for that. You will also find very little information about mintage quantities, but that information may stay (I personally feel). All other information, although possibly valuable, do not fit the same standard of the other articles.

BTW, everything written in Wikipedia is retrievable, so even a vandalism deletion can be recovered. However, be careful with the three undo rule: if your contributions are undo’ed three times in a row, your account will be suspended temporarily.

Anyway, back to the initial topic, I also agree with the three basic steps proposed in order to improve this article and keep the other information in another one. Miguel.mateo (talk) 11:03, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Pfainuk, you have made a very good point. It seems that the article Introduction of the euro can be edited to include the information we here seek to move from this article. The information regarding Slovenia's changeover as well as those of Malta and Cyprus, are not included in this article, however, that information is very relevant to its subject. Should we proceed in integrating the sections discussed above from this article to Introduction of the euro? If majority is in agreement, I would hate to have multiple edits going on at the same time. It might be beneficial in that sense for each of us to integrate specific sections from this article. Commemorative Coins

I thought that Malta will join the "60 years of human rights" group issuing a commemorative coin this year. If this is correct, then the information under "commemorative coins" in this article is slightly not correct ... any comments? Miguel.mateo (talk) 23:45, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
