Name Change

The misapplication of WP:MOS-AR to this name left a well known chap, widely known as Mehmud Al-Hasan, with the unrecognizable "name" of Mahmudu'l-Hasan. George Custer's Sabre (talk) 17:22, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Before I changed it, the title was "Mehmud Hasan", and I decided to put the "al" in there since it's part of his given name, محمود الحسن, pronounced "Mahmūdul-Hasan" (Hasan is not his surname). As far as I can tell, there is no dominant transcription of his name in English, which is why I used a systematic transliteration.
On what basis do you say he is widely known as Mehmud Al-Hasan?
A Google Books search for "Mehmud Al-Hasan" gives 0 results.
A Google search shows that this is the only source that uses the spelling "Mehmud Al-Hasan", besides this Wikipedia article. However the same website also uses "Mehmud Hasan", "Mahmud al Hasan", "Mahmudul-Hasan", and "Mehmood-ul-Hasan" (See here and here).
We can find multiple sources that use other spellings. Some books even use the "name" "Mahmudu'l-Hasan". So we have the spellings: "Mahmud Hasan", "Mahmudul Hasan", "Mahmudal Hasan", "Mahmud ul Hasan", "Mahmud al Hasan", with different spellings of "Mahmud" and "Hasan", and varying degrees of hyphenization. Since there is no established usage, we should either use a more common spelling or use a systematic transliteration. Axiom292 (talk) 01:10, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
Dear Axiom292, I hope you are well. I'm sorry for my delay in replying. You have entirely persuaded me. I have re-checked my many English-language books on Deobandi scholars and I agree that, contrary to my previous feeling of certainty, there is no consistency as to the spelling of his name. Guess what? Even my Urdu-language books offer alternative spellings. I thank you very much for your diligence. I am grateful. Regards, George Custer's Sabre (talk) 22:28, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
No problem. I'm going to change it back to the transliteration "Mahmudu'l-Hasan", then, due to the absence of a primary transcription. Axiom292 (talk) 06:21, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Name issue

Syed Mehboob Rizwi in his History of Darul Uloom Deoband has only used Mahmud Hasan as the name.[1] Darul Uloom Deoband also prefers omitting al [2]. Scholarly article from his pupil Ubaidullah Sindhi omits al. [3] and much better Jamia Millia Islamia omits al from his name, [4] and academic studies omit al as well. [5] Noting all such related sources, I'm making a page move to Mahmud Hasan Deobandi. Related references [6], [7] [8][9][10]
