major revision needed here: Saint Joseph's has their *own* field with this name, they don't play in Orono
[edit]The following statement is on this Saint Joseph's College page, accessed on October 2, 2011: "Mr. Mahaney's vision and generosity not only benefited Saint Joseph's college [sic], but countless others, including the University of Maine, where the baseball field, Mahaney Diamond, is also named in his honor." So for the purposes of accuracy I would revise this article myself to expunge the references to this being Saint Joseph's field too, but I don't live in Maine anymore and thus I don't think I can be sure enough of these facts. - Ed, THANK YOU! Looking at the source now, your claim is abundantly true. That was an egregious error on my part. Kithira (talk) 18:47, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
- You're very welcome, Kithira; glad I could help. Sure, I'd bet it's pretty common for the two fields to get confused with each other for obvious reasons. It's just that I used to teach at the University of Maine at Orono, and when I read here originally that the Saint Joseph's College team shares the same home field with the Black Bears, that struck me as a little strange especially considering that Saint Joseph's is in a whole different part of the state, so I was spurred on to investigate. And thanks for the barnstar! EdMcCorduck (talk) 20:23, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
- Hi again, Kithira, just looking over the article another time, and I'm thinking you may need to make some other changes, to whit:
- The year, namely 1986, that you have the stadium constructed in (in two places that I see) might now be wrong since, judging by the current number 1 Reference, 1986 seems to be when Saint Joseph's Mahaney Diamond was built.
- Similarly, in the "Naming" section the Reference 4 is specifically about when and why Saint Joseph's field was named after Mr. Mahaney, hence the 9/29/01 dedication date in the first sentence of the section probably is not true for the field at Orono.
- And again, Reference 5 is clearly from the Saint Joseph's College Web site, so that has to call into question the accuracy of a lot of the info. in the "Other events" section; that is, perhaps not all of the tournaments listed there were ever played at the University of Maine's field too.
- Ed, I believe I've now covered those. If anything else crops up, please feel free to make the change yourself. I'm not on here as often as I used to be. Thanks again for the catch! Kithira (talk) 14:41, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
