Redirect target

[edit]

There are much stronger reasons for redirecting this page to Magog (disambiguation). First, take another look at that disambiguate page. There is a town in Quebec, and a number of other meanings a reader might have in mind when typing in "Magog" in the search box. That is exactly what disambigs are for: to help people. Taking him right away to Gog and Magog, which is a mediocre and highly unstable article anyway, is just too presumptive. I have now corrected the disambig to make Magog (Bible) the primary reference, since "Gog and Magog" appears only in extra-biblical folklore derived from the Bible, not in the Old Testament itself. Despite popular belief, Ezekiel refers to "prince Gog of Magog", whereas the phrase "Gog and Magog" appears only in the New Testament book of Revelation.

Please also take a look at the links on this page, Magog. A majority of these links will ultimately need to be disambiguated. Most of these would not go to Gog and Magog either, but in the meantime, it is far better that they go to a disambig, than to Gog and Magog.

By the way, I am also opposed to the merging of Magog (Bible) with Gog and Magog, for reasons I have explained at [[Talk:Magog (Bible)]. This proposal has not received much support anyway, and should probably be retired by now. Til Eulenspiegel 13:27, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I strongly disagree with several of your statements. Surely you can agree that most often when someone types in or clicks on "Magog", they are looking for the Biblical/folkloric entity, not the town in Quebec. London is not a disambiguation page simply because there are other Londons, it's the primary topic. Keeping [[Magog (Bible) seperate from Gog and Magog is seperate but related issue; as I argued over there, it's just not efficient to keep them a Magog page seperate from what is meant to be the main page. All it can do is replicate information that's supposed to be at Gog and Magog, which is intended to discuss the development of the pair from their first appearance through the Biblical, folkloric, and Quranic evolutions. Whatever it's current state, Gog and Magog is supposed to be the primary article, and it's what most readers will be searching for.--Cúchullain t/c 20:39, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, I can't agree that someone typing in "Magog" is necessarily looking for Gog and Magog. People looking for them would probably type in just "Gog", whereas if they are looking specifically for Magog, they probably want one of the other articles. Also, there seems to be some circular reasoning in your edit summary where you reverted me on Magog (disambiguation), that Gog and Magog should be the top article on the disambig because the redirect goes from here (Magog) to there, while the reason you provided for reverting the redirect from here to there, was because it is the top article on the disambig. Both of these reverts rest on your assumption that "Gog and Magog is supposed to be the primary article", which seems like a derailment to a different article full of fringe-y stuff for no particular reason when people are actually just looking for "Magog" (take your pick which one). Also the fact I already mentioned, that almost all pages currently linking to Magog should go to one of the other Magog articles on the disambig, and definitely not redirect to Gog. I agree that Gog and Magog is the likeliest search target for "Magog". Google hits, while not necessarilly representative, line up with this theory. Searches used:
-"gog +and magog" noah magog
"gog +and magog" -noah
The "gog and magog" use got 139K hits while the magog/noah pairing got 42K hits. I haven't checked the incoming links, but if they do run counter to this theory, then perhaps the dab page should be moved to the base name. I can check on that later this evening. -- JHunterJ 10:42, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
