"For" instead of "to" Why?

For someone in the know, help me understand why in this example is "for" used rather than "to" ? Is it a colloquialism? Thank you. "Vieira signed for"Srednuas Lenoroc (talk) 10:22, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I'd use "with" instead of either "for" or "to"; I'd assume "signed for" is short for "signed a contract to play for". Huon (talk) 15:37, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
