Amount of elemental magnesium in magnesium citrate, wrong info?
[edit]Hello, This is my first time writing on Wikipedia.
I take magnesium citrate as a daily supplement. I was trying to make sure I am not taking too much so I have been trying to find out how much elemental magnesium is in magnesium citrate.
I found information stating that there is 162 mg elemental magnesium per 1 g of magnesium citrate. This information comes from:
http://www.drugs.com/mmx/magnesium-citrate.html
However, that page has a watermark saying "Archived, content may be obsolete."
So, in coming to Wikipedia I tried to confirm that information. This article says that, "Consuming an adult dose of 10 oz of laxative syrup (@ 1.745 g/oz) implies a consumption of 17.45 g of magnesium citrate in a single 10 oz dose resulting in a consumption of approximately 2.0 g of elemental magnesium per single dose."
I am really bad at math, but what I did was to divide 2 g by 17.45 g. That gave me a percentage of about 11.46% elemental magnesium in magnesium citrate. However, using drugs.com's information there should be 16.2% elemental magnesium in magnesium citrate.
I am also confused by this article stating that the upper tolerable limit of magnesium is 350 mg. In the US, I believe the RDA, which is not an upper limit as far as I know, is 400 mg.
The supplement I take lists 225 mg magnesium (from magnesium citrate), and lists the percentage as 56% RDA. I am really confused about whether the RDA is for elemental magnesium or these other forms of magnesium like magnesium citrate.
It would also be interesting to know how it is that people are able to apparently not have ill health effects taking so much more than what is the RDA or upper tolerable limit when directed to do so by a doctor for surgery prep. I personally have been taking magnesium citrate for its alleged benefits for bone strength, anxiety, and blood sugar regulation, but with recent constipation, I had been tempted to try taking two pills in one day, which is what had led to my search here.
If someone smarter than me could help to unsort all this I, and I think other people, would be very grateful. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.253.130.118 (talk) 04:16, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
Formula
[edit]the formula for magnesium citrate as given in wikipedia is wrong - the correct formula is C12 H10 Mg3 O 14 m wt 451 and content of Mg is about 16 % can give further details if interested maninder.singh@ravenbhel.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.90.165.67 (talk) 07:44, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
Magnesium hydrogen citrate?
[edit]The formula Mg(Cit)2 is certainly wrong. Magnesium citrate has the stoichiometry Mg3(cit)2. I wonder if this substance is really an acid salt, like disodium citrate. Petergans (talk) 09:57, 6 December 2015 (UTC)
- Not better to compare the chemical formulas: C6H6MgO7 vs. C12H10Mg3O14 (Trimagnesium dicitrate)? --Dankedaniel (talk) 22:28, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
Cortisol Inhibitor
[edit]- Mag Cit plays a key role in inhibiting the production of cortisol. It is widely used as a stress management tool, and often as an effective alternative to Diazepam in cases of GAD/PTSD. This needs to be mentioned. Sources are everywhere. Hanoi Road (talk) 14:31, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
Side effects
[edit]I find no evidence for serious side effects like coma or death by Mg overdose under the reference link. Furthermore it could be differentiated between the bio availability of the different types of Mg and if its a healthy user or one with kidney problems and renal failure. As well if it is applicated via infusion or oral intake. Furthermore it is known and should be mentioned also the wiki that Mg citrate is potentially a protector of healthy kidneys against calcium oxalate stones and helps generally to release excess acids from metabolism, stabilizing the acid-base balance in the body. --Dankedaniel (talk) 22:16, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
The ph
[edit]Many people have a misconception that MC is acidic. Perhaps this entry could include the dissolved ph of the chemical. Nicmart (talk) 18:31, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

Solubility is incorrect?
[edit]The solubility is listed as 20g / 100ml. I can only dissolve 2g / 100ml, and that is by raising the temperature to boiling. The product from Bulk Supplements (intended for human ingestion) is listed as 'Magnesium Citrate', but Wiki says that sometimes the actual formulation can of Magnesium Citrate can sometimes be Tri-Magnesium Di-Citrate. Would that version cause the discrepancy (10x)? I think that should only cause a minor change, not 10 times difference. Or is this solubility incorrect and needs to corrected? In the interests of science, someone please try dissolving Mg Citrate into water. Can you replicate the 20g / 100 ml in this wiki? If not let's get this corrected. I think this should be 2g/ 100 ml solubility.2601:183:4B7F:D240:1957:1A76:15FA:609F (talk) 02:14, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
