Laura Spence
Some mention of the fuss over the Laura Spence business? [ -- 195.157.146.246 13:18, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)]
- It was a nonsense PR tabloid fluff piece artificially created scandal designed for Mail readers to wring their hands over. Irrelevent, IMO.
- James F. (talk) 13:28, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- To James F.: did you know that Magdalen College admission tutor Andrew Hobson used to be head of classics at your high school? :-) Arbitrary username 19:40, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Think it's irrelevant to this page, but was fairly notable from a historical point of view. Miles underwood 16:25, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- I have created a page on it at Laura Spence Affair. I tend to agree with those who do not think it worth mentioning on the Magdelan page (as Magdelan itself was not the target of the row, more the whole Oxford University), but thought I'd post on here so that - if anyone chose to talk about it - they could be aware of the article's existence in the future Smeddlesboy 13:04, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
Redirects
I've proposed a change of use for the Magdalen College and Magdalene College pages (currently disambiguation pages) over at Talk:Magdalen College, but it's not yet attracted any comment either for or against. Any thoughts? TSP 17:15, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Current academics include John Stein, but the link is to a different John Stein. The Magdalen one is a physiologist, which the referred to one is a jazz muscian.
Laura Spence
I would second the above request for some mention of the Laura Spence case. The issue here is not anyone's POV on who was at fault, but simply a question of notability. Government ministers became involved, and the story was all over the mainstream media. Arbitrary username 19:27, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Edward VIII
Did Edward VIII really attend M.C.O? There is no mention of this on his wikipedia page, and furthermore, on Prince Charles' page it states that Charles was the first royal to attend university.--Jamesmh2006 03:30, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
- I believe Charles was the first to attend "normally", meaning mostly in the same was as any other student. Note that Edward VII was in Oxford 1859-60, nominally a student at Christ Church; in practice he lived outside the college and was tutored seperately. George V never attended a university - solid naval career - but Edward VIII did indeed go to Magdalen, and lived there, for two years; I believe he left without taking a degree, which wasn't uncommon in those days. Shimgray | talk | 23:59, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Can't find a good source for Edward VIII, but in any case other members of royalty have attended not only university but M.C.O. For example, Prince Arthur, the older brother of Henry VIII, spent a significant amount of time there, and Catherine of Aragon's original wedding tapestries are still hanging in the college. Prince Charles's assertion may depend on a certain definition of the word 'attend' which wasn't necessarily applicable until well after the Medieval period. This brings up a broader problem with wikipedia listings for Oxbridge colleges, which is that a great deal of important/interesting history about the colleges is 'well known' but difficult to document with sources other than internal documents kept by the colleges themselves. Not sure what to do about it - for now I'm holding off adding anything to the page though. John Borne 20:31, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
pronunciation
the pronunciation was ambiguous. please correct me if I made mistake in clarifying it. as it is now, it's MAWD-leen. Or is the second vowel reduced? kwami (talk) 05:24, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
- The second vowel is reduced, it's pronounced "MAWD-lin" not "MAWD-leen" but I don't know enough about IPA to correct it, although it looks like you may have already corrected your first edit. Hannaphrael (talk) 22:31, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. I had gone ahead and changed the given pronunciation, because it seemed so unlikely. kwami (talk) 00:56, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
maybe there should be a little info on why "magdalen" college is pronounced differently than mary "magdalen"? it was once explained it to me, but the explanation i received might be a little more convoluted than what the article deserves. Theserialcomma (talk) 05:24, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
I have added some citations from AskOxford.com which accept both pronunciations. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.214.202.132 (talk) 01:18, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Missing a very important section on the history of the college, and has little material on the buildings. Also needs to add some references. Casper Gutman 15:34, 25 March 2007 (UTC) |

Image copyright problem with File:C.s.lewis3.JPG
The image File:C.s.lewis3.JPG is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
- That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Hobbes
Can Hobbes be added to the alumni list?, he did attend Magdalen Hall (buildings are now part of Magdalen), and recieved his B.A. in 1608. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.21.45.159 (talk) 12:47, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- Magdalen Hall is most closely related to Hertford College, AFAIK. Annecremin (talk) 21:09, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
Lead Image (infobox)
I wondered if there would be any objection to replacing the infobox photo with either of these images these images?-Godot13 (talk) 20:20, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
- I think the infobox image should show the tower, since it is so well known. So I'd !vote for the first image and not the second. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:01, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for your input John of Reading, I agree with you. I will make the change and hope that no one has an issue with it. Thanks-Godot13 (talk) 04:00, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
