Mafia is the big island. Chole is the very small island across Chole Bay to the east. Malangali 14:55, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
So no-one has anything to say about the similarity to the word Mafia as in organized crime? I assume it's coincidence, but the page probably ought to say so outright. 174.46.172.13 (talk) 23:54, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
- The etymologies are dissimilar, relating to different abstract concepts, so my guess would be no. Although they do share a M-F-A pattern via a triconsonantal root, that doesn't mean they are of the same origin or meaning. In this case, Mafia Island most likely takes its name from a word meaning "group (of islands)" or "archipelago", whereas the Cosa Nostra attained the epithet "mafia" from a word meaning "ambition", "boldness", or "arrogance". The words developed along different timelines, with the island's 'Mafia' likely cropping up around the 8th or 9th century during its settlement and inevitable period of pidgin and creole, whereas the word of notoriety, 'mafia', was likely first written in the 17th century in connection with witchcraft, a word written after the names of women accused of bold behavior during the decline of the witch trials. What you have here is an example of a false friend or false cognate. Yabopomonofonomopo bay (talk) 21:08, 16 June 2013 (UTC)
