Would like to see a link about the manga, "Macross 7 Trash" and maybe some information as the article gets updated.
"Radical Departure"?
Panning M7 for having a few "giant monsters," while the original series pitted Earth against a whole race of them, seems silly. Not to mention over half of the Protodevlin crew spent most or all of their time in more-or-less human form. Plus, it's not as if original Macross didn't have its share of slow and repetitive eps, (opinions, anyone?) either.
Of all things to compare the mecha designs to, G Gundam? Other than raw ignorance at some of mechadom's even stranger permutations over the years, I don't see it. At all. --71.65.235.57 10:47, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
I believed it's pretty obvious the tone of Macross 7 is unlike the original.
Well, that's your opinion. Looking at it as objectively as possible, (not easy, admittedly) M7 seems to hold truer to the tone and themes of the original Macross than its other successors, despite the unusual packaging.
Also, why is comparison to G Gundam's mecha designs considered a bad thing, anyway? That just reeks of POV. Doubly so, since I've never heard, read, or seen anything similar, and I've been a big fan of mecha in general for years. About the only parallel regularly drawn between those two is that they're the supposed "black sheep" of their franchises, despite being fairly popular and commercial successes, solely because they present themselves differently from previous shows of their ilk.
Oh, and reverting edits based on some illusory "grudge" from another wiki article? Not exactly the sort of reasoning I'd expect from an encyclopedia. Any other false speculation you'd like to add? --71.65.235.57 18:27, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
Personally, as a hardcore Macross fan, I was disheartened when I firstly encountered Macross 7. I mean, what the heck was the reason of having Valkyries with mouths or monsters appearing in the Macross world? I decided to watch Macross 7 in the end out of my curiosity (like why is it the official canon of Studio Nue?)
At first, the series was kind of slow and Basara was very irritating with his over-the-top Planet Dance music. But later, the series really got better. I kinda even got used to the ridiculous looking Valkyries and since it was only the Sound Force Valkyries that looked like that, I guess it's not that bad. Besides, the Sound Force Valkyries reflect the civilian nature of their pilots.
Later, the show ties up the whole thing about monsters and why they exist in the story. I remembered when I was watching the original Macross, I wasn't sure what the heck was the Supervision Army and who really are the Protocultures, but Macross 7 explained it too. No wonder it is the official canon sequel and not Macross II!
In terms of radical departure, I think the series is pretty true to the original Macross. In fact, it confirmation to the original Macross. For instance, in Macross 7: Encore, the Macross 7 fleet encountered a bunch of uncultured Meltlandis and decide to give them a 'culture shock' - exposing them to Minmay (and Fire Bomber) music and public kissing, very much like the original Macross. However, since the Protodevilns are an altogether different enemy than the Zentradis, they could only logically respond to music differently than the Zentradis.
The only difference in the Macross 7 compared to the original Macross is that it chooses to focus the series on its singer, Basara Nekki and not on its Valkyrie pilots. So, essentially, its like the original Macross but told in the point of view of Lynn Minmay instead of Hikaru Ichijyo. The focus of Macross 7 is the songs. How weird would it be if Macross 7 did not continue in the tradition of Lynn Minmay, who helped the Macross to win Space War I through her songs? Just imagine Macross 7 just filled with space battles but no music? That wouldn't be very Macross-ish.
In fact, it was Basara's songs which pretty much ended the Protodeviln War. I can understand why people are annoyed with Basara, but it's really not his fault. If the producers could stop making 'recycled' episodes and introduce more variety to the music (I hate Planet Dance!!!), the show shouldn't be too bad.
More character information
This page should have more information on the characters, particularly the Protodevlin. For some reason, wikipedia has a bad "track record" when it comes to discussing the antagonists in anime series. Kouban 14:05, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
Manga Name - "Thrash" or "Trash"?
The section of this article (as it is on 12/26/2007) regarding the related manga refers to it as "Macross 7 Trash". Other Macross pages in wiki refer to the manga as "Macross 7 Thrash". Which is correct, and is the section in this article a victim of vandalism? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.68.222.12 (talk) 16:08, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
The manga is definitely called Macross 7: Trash, not thrash. Here's some pictures: http://www.ex.org/1.3/21-m7trash.html and http://macross.anime.net/production/print/seven/index.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.176.49.46 (talk) 01:13, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
Plot Synopsis
This synopsis is overly long, and isn't so much a synopsis as a play-by-play of the entire series. No offense to the work put into it, but it is somewhat mangled in terms of its writing, skipping back and forth between past and present tense. It violates Wikipedia:Plot_summaries, and should undoubtedly be shortened, perhaps with a list of episodes created that gives a short summary of each, a la most other pages about TV shows. So if no one minds, I'll be WP:BOLD and give it a go.Bakaprod (talk) 15:00, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
