Discussion: Changing the Redirect
[edit]Contrary to (popular?) belief, MLS does not universally equate to Major League Soccer. The top Google search result (and 11 of the first 20) is for the Multiple Listing Service, which predates the soccer league by at least four decades. Also, compare search results for "MLS real estate" vs "MLS soccer" ... 19.6 million [1] vs 12.7 million[2], respectively. -- Robocoder (t|c) 06:43, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- However on Yahoo! search for MLS real estate it was at 16 million and for MLS soccer it was at 21 millon -- 205.188.116.138 00:28, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- Whoever put that there might of been on Yahoo! search with different access, who knows, don't know just a quincidence lol -- Twillimsted 20:43, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- This seems funny to me on Wikipedia's search for MLS real state there was 74 pages [5], and for MLS soccer it was 1,061 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=MLS+soccer&fulltext=Search. I guess it all depends on it...my idea overall is that these two Multiple Listing Service and Major League Soccer should be the two bolded items, becuase most people searching for "MLS" are looking for real estate or soccer -- Twillimsted 20:47, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- That's reflected at List of acronyms and initialisms: M. -- Robocoder (t|c) 21:10, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- mls.com and mls.ca both point to the respective Multiple Listing Service for the US and Canada. 64.231.189.11
Seriously
[edit]I know most Americans have a bitter jealous hatred of football (the sport for communist NRA-hating Mexican homosexuals), but how can MLS not direct straight to Major League Soccer?
I'm sorry Real Estate isn’t as popular as football. The above arguments are just personal bias.
This is yet another slap in the face for Wikipedia credibility. --202.47.49.200 14:08, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
Article length
[edit]The article on Major League Soccer is longer than the article Multiple Listing Service. That means more viewer are looking at Major League Soccer. User:JayzRaptorz 18:18, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
Redirect?
[edit]Is there any way we can change this to link straight to the Major League Soccer article? I think thats by far the most common use for this acronym... at least in this english wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.13.184.155 (talk) 07:30, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
The Major League Soccer title cannot be bold. That's not how things are done on Wikipedia! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.228.190.218 (talk) 18:34, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

MLS → MLS (disambiguation) – Most people refer to Major League Soccer. Il223334234 (talk) 08:04, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
- Comment: Maybe in the United States and Canada, but not necessarily in the rest of the world. Zzyzx11 (talk) 21:57, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose it refers to Microwave Landing System, the world over, in aviation. ; and multiple listing service, in North America for real estate. 70.24.247.54 (talk) 06:28, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
- Tentative support; I expect the pageview numbers will bear out that more people are interested in reading about the soccer league than the other topics. Powers T 15:30, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
- Comment. Googling MLS -wikipedia suggests that the real estate meaning edges out the sports meaning. (Nothing on the first page about landing systems.) Kauffner (talk) 13:10, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- The real estate meaning, though, gets only a fraction of the pageviews compared to Major League Soccer (an order of magnitude difference). The league article is in the top 6000 articles in the encyclopedia by traffic. Powers T 15:25, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose. We should be more concerned with usage of the abbreviation in reliable sources than with how many soccer fans happen to be reading Wikipedia in a given week. So far, it looks to me like there is no WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 22:44, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
- Support. MLB search goes straight to Major League Baseball. Both NBA and NHL searches, for example, pull up National Basketball Association and National Hockey League pages with each page having a link to a respective disambiguation page for NBA or NHL abbreviation on top. Same can be done for MLS => Major League Soccer. Looking through the history of edits, I do not see anyone trying to redirect it to Multiple Listing Service; however, users are persistent redirecting it to Major League Soccer. Pageview Statistics support a redirect to Major League Soccer
[edit]Obiously, it's been debated whether or not to redirect MLS to Major League Soccer, especially as Major League Soccer seems to be the most common page viewed falling under the acronym. Just to back this up, here are some pageview statistics in the last 30 days for pages (not subsections or alternate names) falling under ==MLS== Major League Soccer: 99,747 views MetLife Stadium: 39,286 views Maximum Length Sequence: 2,355 views Microwave Landing System: 2,209 views Microwave Limb Sounder: 165 views Moving Least Squares: 629 views Multilayer Switch: 5,423 views Multilevel Security: 2,409 views Medical Laboratory Scientist: 13,246 views Michigan Lutheran Seminary: 141 views Mills Corporation: 1,124 views Multiple Listing Service: 8,702 views
The total views for these pages is 175,436. That means that when combined, Major League Soccer pulls in nearly 57% of the total pageviews. Of course, this doesn't reflect the number of views coming specifically from MLS, but when you consider that the league itself uses MLS in its branding (for example, it's logo, and its website which is mlssoccer.com, rather than major league soccer), it is highly likely that people will mean Major League Soccer when typing in MLS.
