US state - U.S. state?- I've standardized on the abbreviation without periods for consistency. (US Highways' abbreviations don't use the periods, so I don't use them in other cases.) Additional, the Chicago Manual of Style no longer recommends/requires periods in the US abbreviation anymore, and in most other variants of English, they're already gone. - Route description
- Northeast of Higgins Lake, the highway transitioned to a freeway. That freeway ran northwest into Crawford County. - combine sentences

Any reason why "Major intersections" isn't a L3 header?- There shouldn't be two headers in an article with the exact same name.
