Proposal to improve page
[edit]Mária Telkes was a physical chemist who worked on solar energy research, and created the first thermoelectric power generator. The main question I want to ask is this: Why is there so little information on Mária Telkes? The only information given on this Wikipedia page is of her work, which is not very much to begin with. There is no information on her early life, family life, before she became a scientist, or how she got to be a scientist. This would be very important information to include in a person’s Wikipedia biography page because it explains how that person came to be a scientist in the first place. Therefore, it would also be very helpful information if why and when she left Hungary, and how she died were also included in her Wikipedia page. In addition, it would be great to know more on the prizes she won, such as what they were, how she got them, and when she received them. There should also be more pictures of her included in this Wikipedia page since only one is displayed. There are only three references, which is additionally alarming because she was a key scientist to open doors for women in the Physics department. There could also be an additional paragraph on how Telkes impacted both science and women in science in her particular field. Telkes deserves more admiration for her work because it is incredible research, and because she is also a woman that made it in a male-dominated field. Many students research scientists on Wikipedia to gain a better, more clear understanding of that person, and so I am sure there are students who have researched Mária Telkes but had to look elsewhere because of the lack of information. This contribution is also important to add as an ES/WGS student because I am one of these students who tried to find information on Mária Telkes, and was not very successful from Wikipedia. I chose to make this contribution because I believe Telkes deserves more recognition than she has been receiving.
