Dierking initially planned to study forestry at the University of Florida, but an accident delayed her enrollment. She began working at the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida where she became interested in science education and museum learning. She worked with John J. Koran, Jr. as her advisor. She met future collaborator John Falk while he was a vistiing professor in the College of Education at the University of Florida. [1]
