Architect of Mayfair Court
[edit]It was John Howell & Son who signed the planning applications for the 1930s extension, greenhouse and air raid shelter for this house. The documents for the original 1934 planning application for the house itself were lost in WW2, due to war damage. John Howell & Son of Hastings wound up in 1903 as far as I can discover, so that firm cannot be connected with this building.
My working theory is that the designer could have been the American architect John Mead Howells, who did produce Art Deco designs, and who could have designed such a building. Normally it would seem odd to find such a prestigious architect crossing the Atlantic to design a small house in Kent, but Sultan Ibrahim was one of the richest and most influential men in the world, so it's not impossible. Any information on what John Meads Howells was doing in the 1930s would be helpful. --Storye book (talk) 09:03, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- Update: There is the strong possibility that Herbert Kempton Dyson (1880-1944), the structural engineer who designed the Central Bandstand, Herne Bay in 1924, could well have been recommended and called upon to design Mayfair Court in 1934. Any information on the whereabouts of a list of his building designs and commissions would be very helpful. --Storye book (talk) 13:37, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
